Macintosh FTP client software now supported by the CRCSoftware that allows Macintosh computers connected to PennNet's IP network to initiate high-speed file transfers has been added to the Computing Resource Center's list of supported products. Fetch, a public domain FTP client developed at Dartmouth, was chosen after comparative evaluations against competitors, including HyperFTP and XferIt. DCCS Engineering tests verified correct operation with campus hosts of many types over PennNet; the CRC evaluated factors such as ease of use and conformity with Apple's Macintosh user interface guidelines. Testing showed Fetch to be simple to use and very fast. The program includes a substantial online help feature including a tutorial. Fetch is now included in the Macintosh Networking Basic Ethernet package distributed by the CRC. It is also distributed independently. You can pick up a copy free of charge, along with a Quick Start guide, at the CRC front desk. If you already have access to FTP services, you can download Fetch from the directory /pub/mac on the host nisc.upenn.edu under the filename fetch-206.hqx. The current version of Fetch, version 2.0.6, requires a Macintosh Plus or later model and an IP interface (Ethernet interface card or a gateway such as Cayman's GatorBoxCS). It requires Macintosh System software version 6.0.5 or later, Apple EtherTalk version 2.0 or later, and fully configured Apple MacTCP version 1.1 with a unique IP address assigned by your network administrator or the CRC.
