MLA database available via dial-in accessVan Pelt Library has recently arranged with a database vendor, OCLC, to provide access to the Modern Language Association's bibliographical database (MLA) through the FirstSearch easy-to-use interface. Penn faculty and graduate students can contact the Van Pelt Reference Department, 898-8118 or libreference@a1.relay, to request a personal account authorization form for a remote-access password. Terminals in the Reference area at Van Pelt can also be used for access by Penn students, faculty, and staff.
BBS for DOS/Windows usersPenn's Landing BBS is a University-owned DOS bulletin board service (BBS) for use by the University community and by alumni. Services provided include discussion, online games, a software archive for downloading, and limited Internet access, including PennInfo, Gopher, Franklin, and ftp.The BBS phone number is 898-8511 (2400 bps, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop). New versions of antiviral softwareNew versions of the University-supported antiviral software packages for Macintosh and DOS/Windows sys-tems have been released. To protect your system against recently developed viruses, you must have the current version of antiviral software installed. The software is available from the Computing Resource Center on Locust Walk (Monday to Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm). If you have Ethernet capability, you can download the Macintosh software from the server ftp.upenn.edu (directory /pub/mac/misc).VI-SPY for DOS/Windows systems. PageMaker census underwayIf you or anyone in your Penn office uses Aldus PageMaker, please respond to one of the addresses below. Include your name, office or department, the number of users for which you have licensed PageMaker copies (including network versions), what versions you are using (4.2a, 5.0, etc.), and whether you have purchased or upgraded any copies since September 28, 1993.This information will be used by ISC and by Aldus Corporation to determine whether there is sufficient PageMaker presence on campus to warrant an increased level of user support from Aldus.
