Notes and Known Issues for PennConnect 2008 (Spring PC2007-3)
Custom Installation Screen
From the starting Interface screen, click "Custom" to reach the custom installation screen. Click the "Master Installer" button to launch the applications installer, then choose Custom installation to select from a list of applications to install.
If you want to launch an individual application installer, browse or explore the disc and open the "fscommand" folder. Locate the desired standalone application installer and double-click to launch it.
Media Players
Due to licensing restrictions, media players such as Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and RealPlayer are not included on this disc. You can find download links to these supported and recommended media players at Penn's Supported Media Players page:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/specs/mediaplayers.html
Windows
While auto-launching of the PennConnect interface is supported in Windows XP and Vista upon insertion of the disc, users will need to manually re-launch the PennConnect interface after a reboot. From the Windows Start menu, choose My Computer and then double-click the PennConnect 2008 disc icon.
The installers for Penn's supported applications are designed to preserve existing application settings. Nonetheless, it is strongly suggested that you back up any local files such as browser bookmark files, local copies of email folders, address books, and other preferences prior to starting installation.
- Updated Host Session Profiles (SecureCRT, HostExplorer)
PennConnect includes session profiles for popular Penn systems. To receive the most current session profiles for SecureCRT or HostExplorer, please uninstall the previous version of the application through the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. NOTE: Please be sure you have backed up any custom or modified profiles before uninstalling!
- PennConnect interface doesn't launch installers (Windows Vista only)
Users of Windows Vista may experience a situation where installers are not launched as expected, after clicking a button in the PennConnect interface. This seems to appear randomly and is hard to reproduce. It also suggests a compatibility issue with the Flash projector version available to the interface, and Windows Vista (it does not seem to occur in Windows XP).
As a workaround, simply close the interface and re-launch it by double-clicking the PennConnect.exe icon. The PennConnect interface will resume at a point near to where you left off.
Auto-launching of the PennConnect interface is not available for any version of Mac OS. To launch PennConnect, first double-click the PennConnect2008 DVD icon on your desktop, then double-click the "PennConnect" icon.
The installers for Penn's supported applications are designed to preserve existing application settings. Nonetheless, it is strongly suggested that you back up any local files such as browser bookmark files, local copies of email folders, address books, and other preferences prior to starting installation.
- Updated Host Session Profiles (dataComet-Secure X)
PennConnect includes session profiles for popular Penn systems. To receive the most current session profiles for dataComet-Secure X, please uninstall the previous version of the application. Locate the "dataComet-Secure" application icon found in the "dataComet-Secure X" folder in your Applications folder, and drag the "dataComet-Secure" icon to the Trash. NOTE: Please be sure you have backed up any custom or modified profiles before uninstalling!
- 802.1X configuration for AirPennNet/AirSAS and Mac OS 10.5 Leopard compatibility
Penn's supported 802.1X supplicant, Internet Connect, does not function with Mac OS 10.5. Do not install the Internet Connect supplicant preferences on this DVD (or earlier editions). Instead, follow these 802.1X configuration instructions to connect your Mac OS 10.5 system to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
Known Application Issues
- SecureW2 3.3.2 (Windows)
Users will need to reboot in order for their SecureW2 configurations to become active. After SecureW2 is installed (either by the standalone installer or as part of the main PennConnect installation), a dialog box will prompt for a reboot.
Users may experience frequent requests for re-authentication, especially in overlapping coverage areas served by two different wireless access points. As a workaround, SecureW2 can be configured to store user credentials. Follow the steps below to do this.
Windows XP
1) In the system tray at the lower right, right-click the wireless icon and choose Open Network Connections.
2) In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab.
3) Under preferred networks, hilight the AirPennNet network, and click Properties.
4) In the AirPennNet properites dialog box, click the Authentication tab, then click Properties. The SecureW2 Profile window appears.
5) Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
6) Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
7) Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet the next time).
8) Click OK to dismiss all open dialog boxes.
Windows Vista
1) In the system tray at the lower right, double-click the wireless icon and click Connect or disconnect...
2) While the AirPennNet network is hilighted, right-click and choose Properties. The AirPennNet Wireless Network properties dialog box appears.
3) Click the Security tab, then click the Settings... button. The SecureW2 Profile window appears.
4) Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
5) Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
6) Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet the next time).
7) Click OK to dismiss all open dialog boxes.
- Kerberos for Windows (Windows)
Launching the Network Identity Manager from the Program Files menu seemingly does not open the Network Identity Manager window. After doing so, the Network Identity Manager window must be opened from the system tray in the lower right corner by double-clicking its icon.
Users in a domain environment may see an additional credential in the Network Identity Manager in the form user@DOMAIN.UPENN.EDU where DOMAIN is the name of the Windows domain. These credentials do not affect standard Penn credentials, which has the form user@UPENN.EDU.
After destroying a credential, the Network Identity Manager may still show that credential in its display. This is an error with MIT's Kerberos for Windows package; the credential is really destroyed and Network Identity Manager sometimes fails to update its display promptly. To verify that the credential is destroyed, select Credential --> Destroy. If there is no credential option to select, the credential has been destroyed successfully.
- Penn Libraries Toolbar in Firefox (Windows Vista only)
Users of Windows Vista may see an error message about Chrome registration during the initial launch of Firefox. This is due to an as yet unresolved error in the installation of the Penn Libraries toolbar. As a workaround, the toolbar can be manually installed from http://labs.library.upenn.edu/toolbars/toolbars.html
Information Systems & Computing (ISC) will work to resolve this issue and post an updated installer containing the Penn Libraries toolbar at the supported product page for Firefox located at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/specs/firefox.html
- FileZilla (Windows Vista only)
Users of Windows Vista may see "too many retries" error messages when trying to download files. This is because the default download location in the Local Site pane is the root directory (\), and by default in Windows Vista, users do not have permission to write there. To remedy this situation, simply select an accessible location in Local Site (such as the Desktop).
