Notes and known issues for PennConnect 2009 (Summer PC2009-1)

Terminal/FTP applications not installed by default

The terminal and file transfer applications SecureCRT, HostExplorer, dataComet-Secure, FileZilla, and Fetch are not installed as part of the default suite. This is an intentional design choice, since terminal and ftp applications are used less and less at Penn.

You can install these applications with a Custom installation. From the starting Interface screen, click Custom to reach the custom installation screen. Click the Master Installer button to launch the applications installer, then choose Custom installation to select from a list of applications to install.

If you want to launch an individual application installer, browse or explore the disc and open the fscommand folder. Locate the desired standalone application installer and double-click to launch it.

Media players

Due to licensing restrictions, media players such as Windows Media Player and QuickTime are not included on this disc. You can find download links to these supported and recommended media players at Penn's Supported Media Players page:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/product/specs/mediaplayers.html

Windows

While auto-launching of the PennConnect interface is generally supported for both Windows XP and Vista upon insertion of the disc, users will need to manually launch the PennConnect interface for the Summer 2009 edition of PennConnect, initially or after a reboot. From the Windows Start menu, choose My Computer and then double-click the PennConnect 2009 disc icon, then double-click the PennConnect icon.

The installers for Penn's supported applications are designed to preserve existing application settings. Nonetheless, it is strongly suggested that you back up any local files such as browser bookmark files, local copies of email folders, address books, and other preferences prior to starting installation.

  • Updated host session profiles (SecureCRT, HostExplorer)
PennConnect includes session profiles for popular Penn systems. To receive the most current session profiles for SecureCRT or HostExplorer, please uninstall the previous version of the application through the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. NOTE: Please be sure you have backed up any custom or modified profiles before uninstalling!
  • Program Compatibility Assistant messages during installation (Windows Vista only)
During the installation of applications, users may see a Program Compatibility Assistant message about a program not installing correctly. This dialogue box can be safely ignored; selecting Reinstall using recommended settings, This program installed correctly, or clicking the Cancel button results in a functional application. This dialogue box is known to occur during certain installations of SecureW2 EapSuite and during Custom installations of SecureCRT, but might appear at other times.

Mac OS

Auto-launching of the PennConnect interface is not available for Mac OS. To launch PennConnect, first double-click the PennConnect2009 DVD icon on your desktop, then double-click the PennConnect icon.

The installers for Penn's supported applications are designed to preserve existing application settings. Nonetheless, it is strongly suggested that you back up any local files such as browser bookmark files, local copies of email folders, address books, and other preferences prior to starting installation.

  • Updated host session profiles (dataComet-Secure)
PennConnect includes session profiles for popular Penn systems. To receive the most current session profiles for dataComet-Secure, please uninstall the previous version of the application. Locate the "dataComet-Secure" application icon (found in your Applications folder) and drag it to the Trash. NOTE: Please be sure you have backed up any custom or modified profiles before uninstalling!

  • 802.1X configuration for AirPennNet and Mac OS 10.5 Leopard compatibility
Penn's supported 802.1X supplicant, Internet Connect, does not function with Mac OS 10.5. Do not install the Internet Connect supplicant preferences on this DVD (or earlier editions). Instead, follow these 802.1X configuration instructions to connect your Mac OS 10.5 system to AirPennNet.

Known application issues

  • SecureW2 EapSuite 2.0.2 (all Windows versions)
Users will need to reboot in order for their SecureW2 EapSuite configurations to become active. After SecureW2 EapSuite is installed (either by the standalone installer or as part of the main PennConnect installation), a dialog box will prompt for a reboot.

Users may experience frequent requests for re-authentication, especially in overlapping coverage areas served by two different wireless access points. As a workaround, SecureW2 EapSuite can be configured to store user credentials. Follow the steps below to do this.

    Windows XP
    1) In the system tray at the lower right, right-click the wireless icon and choose Open Network Connections.
    2) In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab.
    3) Under preferred networks, highlight the AirPennNet network, and click Properties.
    4) In the AirPennNet properties dialog box, click the Authentication tab, then click Properties. The SecureW2 EapSuite Profile window appears.
    5) Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
    6) Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
    7) Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet the next time).
    8) Click OK to dismiss all open dialog boxes.

    Windows Vista
    1) In the system tray at the lower right, double-click the wireless icon and click Connect or disconnect...
    2) While the AirPennNet network is highlighted, right-click and choose Properties. The AirPennNet Wireless Network properties dialog box appears.
    3) Click the Security tab, then click the Settings... button. The SecureW2 EapSuite Profile window appears.
    4) Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
    5) Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
    6) Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet the next time).
    7) Click OK to dismiss all open dialog boxes.

  • Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 (all Windows versions)
Users may see an error message when launching Thunderbird, after overinstalling the product on certain specific older versions of Thunderbird.

To recover from this condition, simply uninstall all previous instances of Thunderbird, then re-install Thunderbird. Click the Windows Start menu and select Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Classic View --> Programs and Features (Windows Vista). Locate each item beginning with "Mozilla Thunderbird..." click Remove. Then re-install Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 from the PennConnect either by using a Custom Install and selecting only Thunderbird, or use the standalone Thunderbird installer located in the fscommand folder. Thunderbird then should run normally, with no loss of user e-mail data or configuration.
