SecureW2 3.3.2 (Windows XP/Vista)
SecureW2 is the recommended 802.1X-based authentication application for Windows XP and Windows Vista users accessing AirPennNet or AirSAS. To use SecureW2, you need access to PennNet and a wireless networking card that supports at least 802.11b (WiFi) and preferably 802.11g.
This SecureW2 installer has been configured to include the settings for AirPennNet and AirSAS.
Download
SecureW2 3.3.2 is available free of charge to members of the Penn community and is available for download using your PennKey and password.
Click on the download link below. The file will download the SecureW2 3.3.2 installer (which contains the application program and AirPennNet settings) to the desktop.
Note: Internet Explorer users may need to append .exe to the filename after downloading SecureW2 to the desktop.
Run the installer from the desktop and follow the on-screen prompts. Your will need to restart your system to complete the installation. After completing the installation, you may delete the installer file from the desktop.
Configuration and Use
This version of SecureW2 3.3.2 includes the settings for AirPennNet and AirSAS. Use the following information following the installation to complete your computer's configuration for AirPennNet or AirSAS.
Note: users whose laptops have third-party software that controls their network connections will generally need to remove this software to sucessfully connect to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
Windows XP
- Right-click the wireless network icon in the system tray and select View available wireless networks.
- Select the AirPennNet or the AirSAS network and click the Connect button. A dialog will appear telling that additional log on information is required to connect to this network.
- Select Enter/select additional log on information. The SecureW2 Credentials screen will appear.
- Enter your PennKey username in the Username: field and your PennKey password in the Password: field. Leave the Domain: field blank.
- Click the OK button. A dialog will inform you that you have sucessfully connected to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
- Click the Close button. You are now connected to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
- Click the Close button. You have completed setting up AirPennNet or AirSAS on Windows XP.
Windows Vista
- Right-click the wireless network icon in the system tray and select Connect to a network.
- Select the AirPennNet or the AirSAS network and click the Connect button. A dialog will appear telling that additional log on information is required to connect to this network.
- Select Enter/select additional log on information. The SecureW2 Credentials screen will appear.
- Enter your PennKey username in the Username: field and your PennKey password in the Password: field. Leave the Domain: field blank.
- Click the OK button. A dialog will inform you that you have sucessfully connected to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
- Click the Close button. You are now connected to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
- Windows Vista may ask you to select a location for the AirPennnet or AirSAS network. Selecting Public location is usually the best choice. Windows Vista will inform you that you have successfully set network settings.
- Click the Close button. You have completed setting up AirPennNet or AirSAS on Windows Vista.
On subsequent logins, click the Wireless Network Connection information balloon in the system tray to invoke the SecureW2 Credentials window so you can log in and connect to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
Users may experience frequent requests for re-authentication, especially in overlapping coverage areas served by two different wireless access points. As a workaround, SecureW2 can be configured to store user credentials. Follow the steps below to do this.
Windows XP
- In the system tray at the lower right, right-click the wireless icon and choose Open Network Connections.
- In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab.
- Under preferred networks, select the AirPennNet network, and click Properties.
- In the AirPennNet or AirSAS properties dialog box, click the Authentication tab, then click Properties. The SecureW2 Profile window appears.
- Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
- Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
- Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet or AirSAS the next time).
- Click the OK button to dismiss all open dialog boxes.
Windows Vista
- In the system tray at the lower right, double-click the wireless icon and click Connect or disconnect...
- While the AirPennNet or AirSAS network is selected, right-click and choose Properties. The AirPennNet or AirSAS Wireless Network properties dialog box appears.
- Click the Security tab, then click the Settings... button. The SecureW2 Profile window appears.
- Ensuring the PennNet profile is displayed, click the Configure button.
- Click the User account tab, and uncheck Prompt user for credentials.
- Your PennKey username and password may be entered at this time (or simply wait until you connect to AirPennNet or AirSAS the next time).
- Click the OK button to dismiss all open dialog boxes.
This is only a workaround. Information Systems & Computing (ISC) will be releasing a newer version of SecureW2 which more robustly handles authentication. You are encouraged to download the newer version of SecureW2 when it becomes available on this page.
