Note: Microsoft Word 2007 for Windows uses a new default file format (.docx instead of .doc) that other versions of Word for Windows and Mac OS cannot access. Users of Word 2002 and Word 2003 for Windows can install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to read Word 2007 files in their default format; however, converters for Word for Mac have not yet been released, so Word for Mac users can't open Word 2007 files at this time. For more important information on Office 2007 for Windows, see the Computing News article here.

Word is the recommended word processing application for both Mac OS and Windows. It can be used to create, save, retrieve, edit, and print files. Other features include style sheets, merging, tables, customizable toolbars, glossaries, and spell checkers.
