Note: the file format that is the default in Word 2007 and Word 2010 for Windows and Word 2008 and Word 2011 for Mac OS and requires a converter to be opened in any other version of Word.

Word is the recommended word processing application for both Mac OS and Windows. It can be used to create, save, retrieve, edit, and print files. Other features include style sheets, merging, tables, customizable toolbars, glossaries, and spell checkers.

Windows 7 Compatibility

Word 2007 SP2 and Word 2010 function correctly in Windows 7.

OS X Lion Compatibility

Word 2008 SP2 and Word 2011 function correctly in OS X Lion. Word 2004 SP2 does not function in OS X Lion.

Availability

Word is commercial software that can be purchased from the Computer Connection at an educational discount.

Microsoft software is now available to University of Pennsylvania departments through the Microsoft Select Program, a volume license agreement. A detailed description of the Microsoft Program including product information and a FAQ has been prepared by the Office of Software Licensing. All purchases of Microsoft Select software are made through the Computer Connection.

Word may be purchased as part of Microsoft's Office suite of products, which bundles Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, or it may be purchased separately.
