56k Modem Dialup Information & OptimizationMost Internet Service Providers [ISPs] use modem pools that support the V.90 protocol for 56k access. Due to FCC regulations the fastest achievable speed for modem connections is approximately 53k, or 53,000 bits per second. Though clients can connect to 56k modem pools at up to 53k under the most favorable of conditions, several factors affect the connect speed, such as:
If there is any interference on the telephone line at all, i.e. static or pops, the connection speed will generally be less than optimal and you may experience unexpected disconnects. Problems with line noise, or line attenuation, are not always audible to the human ear. Also, experience with 28.8 or 33.6 connection may not be a perfect indicator, as higher speed connections are more vulnerable to line problems. Line NoiseLine noise can be caused by many things and in many places. If there is a suspected line noise issue, you can have Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic) test your line at no charge to see whether there is a problem. Clients who use Verizon for local phone service can call Verizon at 800-275-2355 to request a line test. Information Systems & Computing (ISC) recommends that you do not mention the word "modem" when requesting your line test, as Verizon does not make guarantees on line performance when using a modem. It may be best to report hearing static on the line rather than to mention problems with a modem. Modem Drivers & FirmwareModem manufacturers continually update drivers and modem firmware to improve modem performance. You can usually locate these updates at your modem manufacturer's web site, or possibly at your PC's manufacturer's site. Web sites for University-supported modems are included below. Notes: You will need to know the exact designation and serial number of your modem to select the appropriate updates. These designations are usually printed on the modem itself. Firmware updates can sometimes be complex; it may be a good idea to print the instructions before starting the update process.
