Apple Battery Recall Program

Apple is recalling certain lithium-ion, rechargable batteries that were used with various models of its portable line sold between October 2004 and May 2005. The recall filed with the Consumer Product Safety Commision states that an internal short could pose a fire threat with these batteries.

The affected machines include the iBook G4/12-inch, PowerBook G4/12-inch, and PowerBook G4/15-inch. Apple has initiated an exchange program and will provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge.

No other PowerBook or iBook batteries are part of this recall.

Identifying your battery

The recalled batteries have these identifiers:

  • Model Numbers:
    • A1067
    • A1078
    • A1079

  • Serial Numbers that begin with:
    • HQ441 through HQ507
    • 3X446 through 3X510

If you remove the battery from you portable machine, the serial number is located on the underside. If your numbers do not match the information above, you do not need a replacement battery.

For more information and pointers to instructions on how to inspect your battery, and how to begin the battery exchange process, see Apple's Battery Exchange Program page.
