SnapperMail Configuration Instructions

Note: These instructions were generated using SnapperMail version 2.2.7.01 on a Cingular Treo 650, connecting securely to Pobox.

These instructions assume that you have already setup your Palm OS based device and are familiar with installing applications to it. If you need additional instructions for setting up your device, please refer to the included documentation from your carrier, or visit Palm's Support page and specify the device that you have.

1. To set up your account, open SnapperMail, go to Menu-->Accounts-->New Account
2. Make your selection of POP3 or IMAP4 account (these instructions will be assuming you are using an IMAP4 connection)
3. Fill in the pertinant information in the following screen under Identity (Account name, Your Name, email address and Reply to Address (optional)

4. Click on the Server Tab

- Under Incoming Mail, fill in your IMAP4 server (pobox.upenn.edu), Username, and Password

- Under Outgoing Mail, fill in the SMTP server (smtp.pobox.upenn.edu), Username, and Password

5. Click on the More button at the bottom of the screen. In the Server Settings screen, for IMAP4 settings:

- use port 993
- In the drop-down menu where it says "No SSL Security", select "Always Secure (wrapped port)"
- Under SMTP Settings, Use Port 25 (587 in the future)
- In the drop-down menu where it says "No SSL Security", select Always secure (STARTTLS)
- Leave both of the "Always Trust Server" checkboxes unchecked

6. When you are finished configuring, hit OK until you are back at the Edit Accounts screen. Be sure that your account has a checkmark next to it in the Receive mail from window. Click Done.

The rest of the configurations are up to the end user, but here are some suggested settings:

Under "Edit Account"--> "Rules":
  • "Incoming Mail Rules":"Sync" The amount of mail you choose to sync depends on the volume of email typically received. Start low and work higher when in doubt.
  • "Receive" - It's suggested to receive only the First 4k of a message. You can always choose to receive more of a message at any time.
  • "Retain Ghost message" - Check off that box. That way, messages saved to external storage still are listed in the message list.
Under general "Preferences"
  • "Storage":Remove mail" - it's up to the end user if they would like SnapperMail to remove mail from the IMAP server after a specified period of time. If they are checking messages from multiple machines, then it is suggested that SnapperMail never remove messages from the server
  • "Storage":"Move Mail to Card" - This is one of the best features of SnapperMail. It's a good idea to archive mail to external storage within a short period of time. If you set it for one day, then you free up space on your handheld, but you can still access those messages if you have selected to "Retain Ghost messages" as above.
