Configuring the iPhone for use with Exchange

The iPhone 3G and the previous generation iPhone with OS v2.0 can now receive push updates to the calendar, contacts and email from Microsoft's Exchange server. You must ensure that you have already provisioned Exchange Active Sync for the account in question.

Before you follow the instructions below, make sure that you follow the instructions to enable ActiveSync on your Exchange account:

http://www.upenn.edu/computing/provider/pda/eas/eashowto.html

NOTE: If you are setting up your iPhone to synchronize with an Exchange server, you should not attempt to synchronize your data through iTunes. It is recommended that you disable syncing your contact, calendar and email data in iTunes.

If you have never set up an email account, tap the Mail icon on the Home screen. You will be prompted to enter your account information, and can follow the instructions below

If you have previously configured your iPhone to access an email server, tap the Settings button on the Home screen. Select the Mail category, and tap Add Account. The instructions below are based on connecting to ISC's Exchange server. Please substitute your local Exchange information as necessary:

Exchange ActiveSync

  1. From the Add Account tab, tap Exchange
  2. Set your account information for your particular Exchange server as follows:
    • Account Information:
      • Email: Your email address in the following format: username@exchange.upenn.edu. Other alias names will not work
      • Username: kite\username (the domain plus "\" must be entered before your username)
      • Password: Your email password
      • Description: Enter a meaningful account description
  3. Tap Next
  4. You should see a message that states "Verifying Exchange account information"
  5. If the iPhone is unable to connect to the server, a Server box appears. If this happens, enter mobile.exchange.upenn.edu and tap Next.
  6. You should not be able to connect, and be prompted with the following message: "Would you like to sync calendars and contacts for this account? This will erase all calendars and contacts". Tap Sync.

Your iPhone should now receive push updates from the Exchange server
