ProCD/DVD - Resources for Local Support Providers

The ProCD/DVD is a single-disc release produced each spring (most previous editions were produced in both a Windows and Mac OS volume except Vol 6; see note below). Each volume contains a collection of software, including utilities, updaters, drivers, and installers for both Windows and Mac OS platforms.

A ProCD/DVD Special Edition (SE) is a special release volume which is produced on an ad-hoc basis. Each ProCD/DVD SE volume generally addresses a specific operating system vulnerability, threat, or enhancement.

Other editions of the ProCD/DVD are occasionally released addressing a specific campus-wide project or issue, such as the recent BEN Financials CD, released in November, 2004.

Notes and precautions about ProCD/DVD volumes

As a general rule, annual ProCD/DVD volumes are meant to be an iterative series. Duplication of items across volumes is kept to a minimum. For this reason, to maintain a complete library of the entire ProCD/DVD suite, you might choose to keep older volumes of ProCD/DVD for archival purposes.

Similarly, ProCD/DVD Special Editions are also an iterative series. The newest ProCD/DVD SE will not contain a cumulative patch which addresses all previous vulnerabilites on older ProCD/DVD SE volumes. Each ProCD/DVD SE is produced to address a specific vulnerability. Run all patches on ProCD/DVD SE volumes from oldest to newest.

ProCD/DVD SEs are designed to be a helpful tool to help you patch workstations offline. Keep in mind that ProCD/DVD SEs are not produced for every vulnerability discovered, but those with potential to seriously cripple Penn's networking infrastructure or a significant number of end users' workstations. You will still need to run the update feature of your operating system (Windows Update for Windows, Software Update for Mac OS) to obtain the latest critical updates not addressed by ProCD/DVD SE volumes.

Local Support Providers may order older volumes of the ProCD/DVD or ProCD/DVD SE by calling the ISC Provider Desk at 573-4017, or sending e-mail to prodesk at isc.upenn.edu. However, Technology Support Services cannot duplicate mass quantities of older ProCD/DVD volumes, so there is a limit of one (1) copy of older volumes per School/Center. LSPs may order reasonable quantities of the current ProCD/DVD volume by contacting the Provider Desk as stated above.
