Remote Access: What's the Best Option For Me?

The following chart may be useful in making your remote-access decisions:

Remote access not necessary DCANet / Other
56K Dialup
DSL Cable Modem ISDN
I am a student living on-campus in a dorm or wired Greek House.
I am a faculty, staff or off-campus student and want to check work email from home occasionally (1-3 times per week).
I need to check or be on the internet frequently and for extended periods from home.   See Notes
I hate waiting to download files and would be willing to pay $30-50/month for faster connectivity.
I telecommute and need to move large amounts of data from databases on campus.
DSL is not available in my area.
Cable Internet service is not available in my area.
I don't want the hassle of having technicians come to my house for installation.   See Notes See Notes

** Notes **

  • Some DSL and Cable Modem providers have recently begun sending "self-installation" kits to help people initiate service without a visit from a technician.
  • Per minute line charges often apply for ISDN offerings and can make it cost prohibitive if you are on the internet frequently and for extended periods from home.
