The Penn Web

The University's web architecture is a distributed one, with individual schools and centers hosting content on more than 300 web servers within the upenn.edu subdomain. A central web server provides hosting and associated services for offices and programs that do not have access to web servers within their schools or centers.

The Office of University Communications, supported by the Office of Information Systems and Computing, is responsible for the presentation of the University's home page and associated content, as well as the structure that allows users to navigate among the wealth of resources maintained across the University's information space. This structure includes such online tools as Penn A-Z (the alphabetical index of organizational web sites), an academic and events calendar, directory services, search tools, and a virtual tour of Penn's campus.

How to obtain a web site

  • Official office or program web sites -- Departmental and program web sites are typically housed on web servers maintained by Schools and other business units. Individual School and center web sites offer extensive information for those eligible to participate in their services. Be sure and investigate these. Schools, departments, centers, and other units that do not have access to a web server within their School or center are eligible for a site on the central web server, www.upenn.edu. The site for developers on www.upenn.edu provides information about the central web server.
  • Personal web sites -- Some large schools and centers provide resources for hosting personal sites for their affiliates. Other organizations collaborate with Information Systems and Computing to offer personal site hosting on centrally administered servers. Contact your Local Support Provider or College House Information Technology Advisor (ITA) for details.
  • Student organization web sites -- Web sites are available for authorized student organizations through the Office of Student Life. See the Office of Student Life's Web resources page for details.
