The following steps are required:

Step 1
As the first record in your database, create a header record with descriptive names of the fields contained in your database.
Step 2
Extract the records from your database into a flat ASCII field-delimited file. FTP that file to www.upenn.edu.
Step 3
Create a search configuration file.

The only required configuration option is:

  • dbfile - location of database file

Other configurable options are:

  • datatype - sets type of data for any field that is either numeric or in date format
  • daterange - name of a field in your database that contains dates and allows the user to search for records within a date range.
  • dbtitle - title of database
  • delimiter - delimiter used to separate fields
  • excludefields - list of fields to be excluded from the search and display
  • help - URL of customized search help
  • header - location of customized header file
  • footer - location of customized footer file
  • navbar - flag to determine whether to show navigational bar on search pages
  • search_url - URL of customized search form
  • searchargs - flag to determine whether to show search arguments in search results
  • selectlist - used to create a pulldown menu of possible values for any given field that can searched
  • sortallow - flag to determine whether to allow users to sort search results
  • title - title of provider's site
  • title_url - URL of provider's site
  • view - list of possible formats of search results

Configuration options used in restricting access to your database are:

  • domain_restricted - specifies what domain must be included in the user's hostname
  • pas_authenticated - flag to turn on PennNet ID authentication
  • pasauthfile - specifies the locations of the PennNet ID authorization file. Only users with the PennNet ID's included in this file can search the database.
  • password_protected - flag to turn on provider-defined password protection.

Step 4 is optional depending on how much customization you require for your search form. You can either

  • create a header and/or footer file that can contain as much additional information about your database and searching it as you need.
  • create your own search form if the wording of the search form created by Simple Database Search does not fit your needs.
