Desired changes
Survey question 16
16. If you answered yes, what changes would you most like to see?
000001: Suggested changes: change view system
000001: Suggested changes:New look and feel
000002: Suggested changes:More colorful home page better graphics
000004: Suggested changes:the index list off of the "student's" link should be
shorter and more clearly navigable.
000007: Suggested changes: OnLine Alumni Directory
000008: Suggested changes: You should split the first page into further
sections, i.e. Wharton College etc. Comapred to other college's web
pages this one is one of the easiest, most comprehensive and easiest
to use
000009: Suggested changes: From undergraduate views, should be a clear choice
to the col, wharton, eng.... and so on. it is often very hard to find
a class on the web if you lose the url, as the system is not organized
very well
000010: Suggested changes: I would suggest making more pages with less
information. Also, I think that it is time for Penn to revolutionize
the look of the page. I see the hompages of schools like USC,
Columbia, and NYU and I see that their pages are vastly improved
graphically.
000010: Suggested changes: I would suggest making more pages with less
information. Also, I think that it is time for Penn to revolutionize
the look of the page. I see the homepages of schools like USC,
Columbia, and NYU and I see that their pages are vastly improved
graphically.
000011: Suggested changes:Pages with shorter list and more links. THe web
should cover all University related subjects. Right now, it is very
good, but there is always room for improvement. Departmental pages
should be easier to access. For instance, the biology department.
Further, specific classes should be easier to reach as well. It is
somewhat difficult to find them even with the search engine
000012: Suggested changes:more pictures and graphics go look at yale's web
page!!
000014: Suggested changes: Have a better search function. Publish Penn
athletics scores.
000020: Suggested changes: Make more links to useful sites on the internet,
so students can easily find information such as weather, travel info,
Philly info, activities, etc. Also, update info more frequently. One
example of something that was left on the webpage too long was the
info on the student page about the Penn Reading Project. That was
only recently replaced with Family Weekend info.
000022: Suggested changes:A better search guide for the entire system. I
soemtimes have trouble finding things even when I type in the EXACT
location name to the search!
000022: Suggested changes:More information. Some other schools go into more
specific requirements, and more details on special programs such as
study abroad.
000023: Suggested changes: A change in the first page of 'views' An easy
way to get to course and club home pages. better organization. Just an
easier way to find what I am looking for, whatever it may be.
000024: Suggested changes: More easy access.
000026: Suggested changes: -Consistency -Change from "views" to more
hierarchial menu system
000026: Suggested changes:I mostly end up using the web to get homework or
look up phone #'s addresses. I think that these things should be a
lot easier to get to, not buried in a list of places to go. For
example, just to find the phone directory, you have to go at least one
screen down to find the link! I also think that Pennet should get rid
of its 14.4 modems and get up to the speed of the great majority of
the modems on people's systems (28.8 ;).
000028: Suggested changes: An easier way to find what I want. Easier access
to course and club home pages A dirctory very similar to the hard copy
of the penn directory except up to date and query capabities and Dorm
and e-mail listings.
000028: Suggested changes: A uniform events calendar would be nice, with as
many events as possible (athletic, arts, etc) on a day week page with
links.
000028: Suggested changes: anything possible over the phone should also be
possible over the web.
000034: Suggested changes: Udates more often More graphics (animations, etc)
Better help pages
000035: Suggested changes:up to date information Kill the cheesy yellow in
the homepage. Make it white, red and blue!
000036: Suggested changes: More ports. I do most of my research from home.
Tonight it took 29 attemps to connect to the Penn Computer. Sometimes
I can't get on at all. I would also like to see the Kennett Square
link upgraded to 28,800 baud.
000037: Suggested changes:I think the athletic web is not nearly as easy to
use as it should be. Also, it seems to change format often but it not
usually kept up to date consistently.
000037: Suggested changes:make it easier to get to certain things like school
and department pages.
000037: Suggested changes: Don't have the links in a long random list.
Organize more. Use graphics for links (as opposed to hypertext.
Graphics looks better then blue text.)
000038: Suggested changes:more alumni information
000038: Suggested changes: -better organized -A list of all related links on
the main page -continued integration of graphics, quicktime, sounds,
etc.
000041: Suggested changes: More current information.
000041: Suggested changes:Changes are always good but I think is great as it
is
000045: Suggested changes: easier and more accurate search engines for email
addresses throughout all schools and faculty
000048: Suggested changes: Student Organizations should be easier to access!
This means either a small button on the FRONT page so all outsiders
can easily find them or a more prominent display on the view pages.
000050: Suggested changes: a better search engine more class homepages
000051: Suggested changes:Penn news up to date
000055: Suggested changes: integration of the various schools into the
www.upenn.edu web site so that there is consistency across college,
wharton, grad schools, etc...
000055: Suggested changes: How could the Penn Web better help a "computer
idiot" like me to get what he she wants from the Web.
000055: Suggested changes: more audio and video items - student life guide -
especially for new students
000056: Suggested changes: Not anything too drastic, but make the Penn web one
that other academic institutions across the U.S. and the world envy!!
000059: Suggested changes: make it easier to get to the most frequently
accessed pages. there's no reason not to have penn-in-touch on the
main penn page. update the picture on the home page more often to
reflect a greater number of penn events and activities and the
diversity the penn experience offers. provide text-only pages for
those who want them. have one central calendar with ALL campus events
on it--how about calendar.upenn.edu or www.calendar.upenn.edu allow
people to restrict the viewing of their phone number and other info on
the penn directory to penn only ip addresses. i don't care if penn
students can get my phone#, but i don't want the world to be able to.
000062: Suggested changes:comments about changes. testing.
000063: Suggested changes:Individual departments need to be more diligent in
keeping information update - and getting rid of the out of date stuff.
000068: Suggested changes:make it easier to find things, views are very
confusing at times. I am not sure how many of us know if you click on
the picture to are taken somewhere.
000071: Suggested changes: The search engine is very weak. It should be
replaced with another alogrithm that is capable of producing better,
more consistent results.
000079: Suggested changes:consistently updated information, more departments
programs with web pages, ordering from the Bookstore Computer
Connection or a catalog provided for the Bookstore through the web
000082: Suggested changes: home page to look more classical.
000084: Suggested changes: There should be a place from the staff view where
we can find a listing a events that are current and relevant to us.
It should not be burried under departments and should be as easy to
find as possible. The calendar is ok but a lot of people don't use
it. It is so small and obscure a lot of people don't even realize
that it is there.
000085: Suggested changes: Easier navigation, better logic to the
relationship of items. Also, on other collegiate Web pages, when you
get directory information about an individual's e-mail address,, you
get an e-mail template. That's a real convenience.
000086: Suggested changes:put a little more interaction in it
000087: Suggested changes: Change from the "view" menu
000094: Suggested changes:The front page is pretty confusing. The various
student views might need to be reconsidered.
000100: Suggested changes:A single page for all business office links with
notifications of any recent changes improved organization of sites and
files for easier searches for topics and offices
000101: Suggested changes:Clearer navigation cues
000102: I think a total revamp is needed.
000103: Suggested changes: More information about the various schoools, many
have little or no information.
000107: Suggested changes: Keep Directory information current. Improve
Directory support functions.
000109: Suggested changes:Need for web sites to be updated more frequently.
000110: Suggested changes:get rid of view system, replace with functional
categories
000115: Suggested changes: certain images need to be reduced in size (ie
admissions) library web needs revision. move telnet library searches
to web
000122: Suggested changes: Easier access (not "view" oriented); better
positioning of the "Directory" site so don't have to scroll to query;
a "what's new" location
000124: Suggested changes: Get a search engine that works.
000128: Suggested changes: eliminate the views and go for a more
consistently-designed site that offers, first and foremost, ease with
which one may locate any bit of information on our servers. robust
search engines, clear navigation, etc, are ESSENTIAL to an information
site. don't assume how someone will want to approach such a vast
array of information that we provide.
000136: Suggested changes: We need a MUCH better Search engine (MIT's is
good) We need a place where people can go to get Web Design help
support ideas.
000138: Suggested changes:change the view page system; simplify the graphics
so it's faster, make the library a 1st page choice (although we can
put it on our bookmarks). Get individual schools (like GSE) to update
info quicker.
000143: Suggested changes: more information about classes and professors.
also, better links to major requirements.
000144: Suggested changes: a better search engine more class homepages
000148: Suggested changes: Put more on it. All paper publications should be
available.
000149: Suggested changes: more user friendly... frequent update on
information such as study abroad info... wharton students' homepages
are not listed alphabetically..
000152: Suggested changes: I think that Penn should incorporate more links on
the home page so you don't have to work your way throught so many
pages which people don't need to see. As an undergradutae student, I
don't need to choose between Grad students everytime I want info.
000155: Suggested changes: get rid of views get rid of uninformative images
(I know i'm in a tiny minority on this, but it is my opinion) I have
trouble with the ISC hierarchy. I usually have to search it to find
what I want. There is a lot there, but the menus don't seem to lead
to it.
000157: Suggested changes:Improve the Penn Search Engine Clean up out old data
and links. Easier identification of data that is out of date (more
specifically, get data source to update when necessary and in a
timely fashion or remove label the link as out of date.)
000160: Suggested changes: I don't have any specific remedies -- it's just
that the opening page doesn't seem too conducive to efficient
navigation -- the categories on the buttons don't really say much
about things that students here at Penn would be interested in
searching for. It seems more designed for the outside visitor to Penn
via its website.
000166: Suggested changes:more frequent updates made. more frequent changes to
openning page, seeing the same page everyday gets borring
000169: Better front-end, a RELIGIOUS devotion to keeping information current.
The basic "look and feel" is pretty good already. But if you know a
page exists, you can't always find it easily starting from the
homepage, and the search engine is embarassingly bad. That's a big
failing. Only one real content complaint: What the hell happened
with Homecoming NOT ONE STITCH of information was on the Penn Web
until late Friday, if then -- nothing on the homepage or viewpages,
and a Search turned up only a footnote-sized reference to the
Homecoming game. Many alumni friends asked me about it. If the Penn
Web isn't going to provide information on things like Homecoming
events, why have it be accessible beyond PennNet at all Whoever was
responsible for developing this content ought to get a serious
reprimand at the least.
000175: Suggested changes: can't find some important numbers on the web
000179: Suggested changes:Need a better search engine. I rarely get back
relevant documents
000190: Suggested changes:See view answer above.
000191: Suggested changes:The search and index functions have extremely low
return rates of what I'm trying to find. They need to be indexed
better.
000195: Suggested changes: quick direct navigation from main page to academic
departments and course listings.
000228: Suggested changes:I think that it should be easier to navigate. Links
to the schools of the University should be on the first page; you
shouldn't have to go through intermediary pages. Also, there should be
a central page that links to all course homepages. Professors
maintaining these pages should register with this central site. This
is easy to do and should have been done years ago.
000233: Suggested changes:showing important events in the first page, with a
direction and information to the appropriate link. Showing important
incidents as well such as recent crime happened where and when..so
that every body be ware of. I think in the mean time these days the
first page should focus about campus safty, procedures, warnings and how
to get quick help and how to report by e-mail or any other way about
certain things such as :suspects,crime....etc.
000240: Suggested changes: make it easier to use. make the initial categories
more obvious so that finding information isn't a trial and error
thing.
000241: Update the directory to include fraternity sorrority affiliation. It's
already in the database. Also add the administrative sections in the
beginning. Allow full searches not just start with searches,
particularly with e-mail adresses. One last comment: work on the way
the course register and the registration information are presented.
And allow us to register through Penn InTouch without using that
annoying PARIS.
000243: Suggested changes: Make sure that the quality of the departments'
pages is consistent University-wide. Some departments' pages look
great, and some look as if the departments are rather unconcerned
about their presentation on the Web. Our own department is working to
make our page look more professional (as yet, it's only text and needs
some graphics to make it look more inviting).
000246: Suggested changes:more job listings. a clearer and easier to use web
page
000252: Suggested changes: MUSH easier naviagation. A easier way to get to
course and club homepages.
000259: Suggested changes:CLARIFY the motivation behind such things as the Web
Stamp and Explore a View. I had no idea what the heck they meant until
this survey explained them. Even a little "Look for the Web Stamp
for official Penn-sponsored information!" on the main page would be
helpful. Encourage each department to institute (or at least
recommend) a distinct "look" or template for its pages.
000261: Suggested changes: The graphics could be a bit better developed. The
web shield looks kind of dumb. Also, there needs to be an
easily-accessible page with the dates of all breaks, exam periods,
etc. The existing calendar application isn't very good because you can
only look at one month at a time. There is a one-page academic
calendar somewhere on the Penn Web, but I forgot where it is and it is
difficult to find.
000262: Suggested changes:Useful links
000263: Suggested changes:reduce search engine crashes update information
frequently
000265: Suggested changes: update more often
000268: Suggested changes: Easier navigation per earlier comments.
000270: Suggested changes:Easier to access departments to find info that way
(aka similar to Spike course downloads)
000273: Suggested changes: more accirate and current info. publihed per
department and school in a consolidated calendar, with more info. per
event (prices, tiems, etc.)
000282: Suggested changes: Search function shows pages in a complex way - I
never can find what I want with it
000283: We support pages linked to from the PennWeb (Student Financial
Services) and we need to made clear who we contact to have links and
text updated as related to SFS.
000291: Suggested changes: add more information on current activities going
on around campus
000296: Suggested changes: Better searching and navigation.
000299: Suggested changes: Changes not specified: I think you should view
Penn Web as dynamic, not static, with need for ongoing review and
revision over time.
000301: Suggested changes: Better navigation Less convoluted links More
uniformity among various department web pages(esp. The College)
Enhance image as an Ivy League university (see Harvard's Homepage)
PARIS online!
000314: Suggested changes:It won't continue to be good if it does not
continually change, but I have no specific suggestions.
000315: Suggested changes:Simpler, menu-based homepage
000318: Suggested changes: I think the web page should reflect the school.
I've seen other Ivy League Schools' pages and their's are pretty
graphic.
000319: Suggested changes: more information, more up to date
000320: Suggested changes: stronger search engine, clearer front page
000324: Suggested changes:Make the pages after the homepage less like a list,
and more like a table or something organized that looks nicer than
simply a list of topics. (check the EE homepage to see what I'm
talking about).
000325: Suggested changes: I think all departments in the university should
create web pages and update them on a regular basis.
000336: Suggested changes: Better search engine. It is so hard to get any
information by just typing a keyword!
000337: Suggested changes: Keep working on refining the structure and
organization. However, please do not make frequent major changes to
the structure. Some sites (e.g., www.microsoft.com) seem to be
completely redesigned on almost a monthly basis, making it hard to
remember where things are located. Foster improvements to currency
and accuracy of information. If there is not already one on staff,
someone should be appointed the "Official web noodge" to
systematically review all component pages on a weekly basis and
contact the departments that provide the info when they are clearly
out of date or when links are broken or old.
000342: Suggested changes:A logical way of finding the information you want
You should be able to go directly to a department's page if you know
it's name!
000344: Suggested changes: more information
000348: Suggested changes: The search, from my experience, is not really that
accurate. Maybe make it a little more detailed when returning the
items matched from the query. Someone also mentioned that there should
be a page on all the local spots, restaurants, hotels, etc. Kind of
like in the Penn Book they give us in the beginning of the year. You
may already have this, but I never checked... someone just mentioned
it...
000349: Suggested changes: putting PARIS online
000354: Suggested changes: Penn's search engine is slow and not that
accurate. It's very hard to find things within Penn when the search
engine is not that good. I know that penn's engine can't be as good
as AltaVista, but it really is not that good for finding things at
Penn. It once took me a very long time to find simple information
about the french Department, as I had to try almost every possibility:
French, French 140, French Language, Romance, Romance Languages, and a
few other things. I finally found it by not using the search engine
atall and by going another way.
000358: Suggested changes: more intuitive 'view' system i find difficulty
finding what i need to find. i often resort to the search engine, for
i never know which 'view' to go through.
000360: Suggested change: I think that there should be a constant attempt to
upgrade and improve the system.
000365: Suggested changes:wharton web is horrible. there's no information on
it!!!
000366: Suggested changes: Effective search engine (would help eliminate
problems I've found people have in guessing where to find things, due
more to the University structure than the web design - "Where do I
find Religion courses, etc."
000372: Suggested changes: I think the backgrounds on some pages should be
altered so the text is easier to read (ex. Nursing Pages) maybe I am
using an old Netscape version but they can be hard to read. Also, I
think information should be cross-referenced a bit better. Many of
the homepages found on the School's pages are not listed under
"Faculty Home Pages", but they exist. Generally though I have learned
a lot from the Web pages and they are wonderful!
000392: Suggested changes:I would like to be able to register for courses
through it
000394: Suggested changes:Place a link for the Penn Directory on the homepage.
000395: Suggested changes: The search engine should be improved. It always
brings in irrelevant information
000398: Suggested changes:More current updates Online registration (ie PARIS)
system more capabilities through Penn-In-Touch a PHONE directory on
line more pictures (for pre-frosh) of places like Locust Walk and the
Quad
000399: Suggested changes:the wharton homepage sucks. cannot find anything on
it
000401: Suggested changes: An improvement in the search function
000402: Suggested changes:One big, huge list that has every page (except
personal pages) listed. Alphabetical and by subject I'd like to see
better searching especially within the DP and the Almanac
000404: Suggested changes: Nicer graphics. The basic home page is pretty
unattractive compared to other universities. In addition, it is often
outdated - the "Welcome Class of 2000" theme was up for a month and a
half- and the homecoming theme is still up now.
000408: Suggested changes: The Web could use more graphics, and could be made
more attractive. Other universities seem to have more interesting
sites. Also, they have weather and news links.
000409: Suggested changes: More impressive graphics
000411: Suggested changes:the penn search has GOT TO IMPROVE.
000418: Suggested changes:I'm not sure how to accomplish this, but the "meat"
of the information needs to be presented in a clearer manner. Often
times, I'm not sure which general heading to go to so that I can find
my specific information that I want.
000419: Suggested changes: better search engine
000420: Suggested changes: 1.Section for Research works categorized by
departments. 2.Section on "On line Course offerings" 3.Links to
research project publications 4.Links to tested shareware (with
opinion on them)
000421: Suggested changes:The athletic web has a bad layout and is often not
up to date. Also, I'm waiting for the Study Abroad page to come back.
000424: Suggested changes: Any change would be refreshing. It becomes
monotonous and tiresome to see the same format day after day. I think
an annual or semiannual change in format would be good.
000432: Suggested changes: More traditional University categories (e.g.,
Admissions, Alumni, Academics, Student Services, etc.) in addition to
the Views.
000436: Suggested changes: -- if possible, get info for all the offices
listed in the index -- make ppl keep things up to date
000438: Suggested changes:Needs much more speed. Seems to take forever to
change screens. Would like to access databases like Lexis Nexis
quicker.
000446: Suggested changes: Not too many changes, because it is fine overall.
But make changes to it so that it will be a home page other academic
institutions across the country and the world can envy.
000452: Suggested changes: I liked it better before the view system
000453: Suggested changes:more catagories such as directory and school
downloads and career placements.
000455: Suggested changes: Index page made more intuitive
000457: Suggested changes: graphics
000460: Suggested changes:keep thngs up-to-date --- including information and
technology capabilities.
000466: Suggested changes: The whole front page system
000469: Suggested changes:I think PENN Web should change as the times change.
We shold continue to update and remain current. at hte present time, i
like the PENN web.
000473: Suggested changes: more graphics
000474: Suggested changes:Invite some business people in to explain how they
do it and scale back the academics influence.
000479: Suggested changes:Make student directories and PENN in Touch accesible
from http: www.upenn.edu
000481: Suggested changes: more pictures -it's a nice campus after all!
000482: faculty web pages should be easier to find. have a page that links to
each page catagorized by subject.
000486: Suggested changes:Sometimes the only way to find something is to
perform a search. The system should be straight forward enough that
one can follow links to a desired site.
000487: Suggested changes:make the pages with a little more graphical
experience
000490: Suggested changes:U-Penn Home Page should have more detailed
explanation about what this site means. For Example, what kind of
materials in 'student' site.
000491: Suggested changes: make it easier to navigate. its too complicated to
move around as it is currently set up
000492: Suggested changes: The primary problem I have encountered is with
information that is not up-to-date. This appears most noticeable,
however, with indiviual departments and schools as oppose to
University-wide information.
000493: Suggested changes:It's hard to say; I'm quite pleased with Penn's web
(check my response to 17). It is difficult for me to imagine how much
better Penn's web could be -- obviously my perspective is somewhat
limited! So, suprise me!
000494: Suggested changes: make PennInTouch easier to find!
000495: Suggested changes: easier accessibility to certain departments' course
information
000496: Suggested changes:replace view structure
000501: Suggested changes: Would put certain campus focal points in a more
prominent location, eg, the bookstore, the alumni association,
library, computer connection. Services and centers that every campus
member as well as alumni and visitors typically use should have a more
prominent location on the website. Also, in the faculty staff
directory it should be a requirement to list your title or function.
Finding a name with no title and in some cases no address is not at
all helpful.
000502: Suggested changes:Information must be updated at least by 8:00 a.m every
day. I feel this is important because when I am in hurry, which
is 75% of the time, I would prefer to do "one-stop" shopping.
000503: Suggested changes: New organization that does not use views. Very
robust search engine. Directory on top level. Very clear
indications on every page of ownership, revision date, provenance.
000504: Maybe more background pictures of Penn's campus.
000505: Suggested changes: make it easier for other people to visit the
libraby
000508: Suggested changes: The home page. As I said, I don't like the view
structure
000510: Suggested changes:Change the view theme. It is very confusing. I can
never figure out where the information I want is located.
000511: Suggested changes: -- I'd love to literally see more of the
University. Pictures of the University campus, buildings and people
would make the site much more attractive. -- The individual pages (for
departments, etc.) are usually very good. But its often difficult to
navigate between them. I often just try entering a URL I think might
work and then navigating my way from there.
000512: Suggested changes:See my comments above; I don't think the "identify
yourself as a member of a constituency" approach is effective.
000513: Suggested changes: For starts, could you please update or throw out
information, such as the Bookstore promotions which date back to May.
How about up to date book store hours
000516: I would like to see a more user-friendly menu system , possibly with
short explanations of the items to be found under each menu item.
Also, a more diversified menu on the Penn homepage would be of greater
help in choosing a direction in which to find information. I would
also like to see a comparible system to PARIS on the web.
000517: Suggested changes: I didn't even know that there was a Penn Index or
a search engine. I think these two should be more prominently
displayed on the home page.
000519: Suggested changes: Information should be "policed" for accuracy.)
000520: Suggested changes: I would like a more complete events listing
000521: Suggested changes:easier directory system
000522: Suggested changes: Aesthetically pleasing graphics. Clear ways to find
information.
000523: Suggested changes: Create a better search engine. When the search
engine produces results the listing should inform you around what is
in the documents found. (For example some search results have just
given ne "Penn Info Document" as the listed document. This doesn't
tell me what I need to know to pick the right link to follow.)
000525: Suggested changes:Progress without change is not possible.
000530: Suggested changes:Keeping information as up-to-date as possible is
extremely important to me.
000535: Suggested changes: I surf the Web a LOT, and I find Penn's site very
frustrating at times. The Penn Web page is anything but intuitive. I
think that the resources should be listed under categories that
people recognize. For example, given the list of "views," where
should a person expect to find the Library Web A great example of
a well organized home page is Yale's. The phonebook is linked right
from the main page. (Hooray!) And the other links are organized under
easy-to-understand categories. Plus, each category link contains a
brief description of what you can expect to find on that page. I
created my own page of Penn links for my own personal use at http:
pobox.upenn.edu davidtoc upenn.html Note that these are the links
that *I* use most often. Lastly, more pages should list PHONE NUMBERS
of the relevant department.
000536: Suggested changes:PARIS online
000540: Suggested changes:revamp your image map on Penn's main homepage so
that it's more intuitive and efficient in helping the user find what s
he is looking for.
000541: Suggested changes: A graphic device on the main homepage to indicate
something new and time-sensitive, like emergency closing bulletins or
other significant info like the restrictions concerning traffic when
Clinton was on campus. A way to signify the late-breaking news that
needs to reach people urgently.
000549: I am not thrilled with the front end graphics. I'd also like to see
the links to other Universities organized in a manner that is easier
to access.
000550: Suggested changes:even good ideas can be improved
000552: Suggested changes: More should be done to ensure accuracy and
consistency across the university, school and department pages.
Also, all main pages should include another way of getting in touch
with the source, ie. an email address, and postal address and a
telephone number. Often, that's all I'm looking for and it's not on
the page at all.
000555: Suggested changes: more intuitive interface - it is hard to find what
I want. More acurate and easily accessable list of penn
orginizations, with adresses and phone numbers even if they don't have
a web page.
000556: Suggested changes:Changes as indicated in my responses to questions 8
and 10 are important. Also, changes corresponding to my answers to
question 11. Accuracy is very important; revision dates or quality
markers should be clearly explained and labelled as such.
000557: Suggested changes: Some creativity!!!!! An examination of the kinds
of web pages that other institutions and organizations are creating.
000558: Suggested changes: Post an alumni calendar - tough to find alumni
events on the university calendar. The Web is a great way for me, as
an alumna, to stay informed about Penn. Help me take advantage of
it!!
000561: Suggested changes:what i mentioned above,
000564: Suggested changes: more info on courses and degrees
000569: Suggested changes: Have the information be current. As a staff
member, I have often tried to get assistance so that i may add and
update information that is relevant to my department. I have never
have been able to contact the correct person for assistance. i can
update my own pages, but cannot add events to the main calendar, for
instance.
000571: Suggested changes:Put the DP on-line. Publish Penn Ivy sports events
and results.
000575: Suggested changes:Bring back the old style of the Web Page like in
1994 and 1995. I find it very confusing and hard to get to the needed
info. by using the different views.
000582: Suggested changes: make a bit more consistent across the system (in
terms of graphics, layout, etc)
000584: Suggested changes: 1) Ditch the "view" method. A web organized by the
types of services provided (class information for everybody,
location information for everybody) would be good. 2) Implement a more
comprehensive and more powerful search tool. 3) Have improved
graphics. The pages tend to be bland and obvious. Change the colors
around, experiment with new graphics and text formats. 4) Improved
organization. It's a little presumptious to categorize people as
"students" and "visitors" and "faculty" when they often use the
same tools.
000585: Suggested changes:
000587: See Question 8.
000588: Suggested changes: New navigation systems for each view. I'd love to
help with this project. I have a company called Controlled Chaos in
Haverford. For the past year and a half I worked with CKS Group in
Silicon Valley and New York managing the development of sites for
Citibank, Prudential, and many others. I also have access to great
creative talent.
000590: Suggested changes: easier access to directories such as penn
expertise, who is, etc.
000591: A more useful navigation system. It might be able to be improved
within the "view" system.
000593: Suggested changes:better access to HUP
000597: get rid of the views. not quite sure what to replace it with.
Princeton's web site has a nice system.
000602: Suggested changes:make it more enhanced
000606: Suggested changes:easier to access and find info.
000615: Suggested changes:1. Delete pages if not updated within a certain time
2.Penn Search engine usually gives duplicates of most items. Why is
this The result is that fewer usable hits are diaplyed per page. 3.
Many pages have no title, so the search engine either doesn't find
them or gives little information about content. 4. i think we can
present a more appealing face to the world on our home page.
000619: Suggested changes: more graphical layout and more easy access. Links
are badly named so that I am not sure where to click
000620: Suggested changes: I believe prospective students should have the
opportunity to talk chat with students at Penn. I know a friend who
befriended someone at Brown through the internet. By doing this I
believe it will help prospective students learn more about Penn and
hopefully increase their interest in the university. Over one third of
Penn's applicants apply to Wharton. Obviously, Wharton is an intergral
part of Penn. I believe there should be more infomation about Wharton.
The kinds of programs, admissions, courses, etc.
000622: Suggested changes:many homepages, especially student activities and
the international studies&business homepage need to be updated now,
and regularly
000623: Suggested changes:More links
000627: Suggested changes:More accurate job postings, lists of upcoming events
on campus
000628: Suggested changes: The beginning interface--I still find it confusing.
000629: Suggested changes:Could PARIS be incorporated into the web for
registering without the (often) annoyance of PARIS
000630: Suggested changes: I'd like a friendlier view choice on the front
page. I understand that you want people to identify, but I often find
that I'm searching around, looking for what I want. Usually I give up
and end up using the search engine (which usually requires that I wade
through a bunch of options until I find exactly what I want.) The
other thing that would be nice is a more consistent look across Penn's
campus. As a staff person, I understand how complex a task that would
be, but if a really spiffy model were set up, there may be more
volunteers than you think -- a number of departments have asked for
assistance in setting up their home pages, and I think they would
value a model to follow.
000631: Suggested changes: Just more information about things on and around
campus. Practical Penn (online) is only good to a point. How about
an upcoming current events page off of the Student view page with
various subpages dividing the topics Although, I don't attend
fraternity parties, even allowing fraternities to have a page to
advertise on would be an immense hit with the students as long as they
are informed of its existance. Just a few ideas... topics like
upcoming con
000636: Suggested changes: More pictures
000639: Suggested changes: Reconsider the "view". Isn't there some way to do
this sort of thing dynamically or fluidly or something Is it possible
to create personal views, with user-specified links I don't trust the
Penn Web search engine, as I don't understand exactly what it is or
isn't searching, nor when it's searching. Can't we spring for Harvest
or something that reams every *upenn.edu server every day That is,
in addition to the options for restricting searching to specific
servers
000643: Suggested changes: less time for information to come up (i guess this
depends on the memory capablility of the computer i use but because
there is such huge graphics it sometimes takes too long for something
to come up perhaps an option of clicking a box to see the grpahic
would be better because if i know what info i want and quickly want
it, i HATE waiting for this huge picture of let's say the class of
'2000 also easier access of personal homepages of students - the
college and dolpin is easy to find but it is very difficult to find
homepages of students with eniac and wharton accounts is is futures,
wharton, seas...i never know which server works because it is not
listed under undergraduates schools
000649: Suggested changes: I think the main home page is very confusing --
The only links I use from it are the index and the calendar. I have
especially had difficulty finding student health and Penn in touch
services. Usually when I do a search, it does not find what I am
looking for. I know Bryn Mawr is a smaller school, but I was using
their web the other day and I liked it very much.
000653: Suggested changes: change the whole "view" system. it's misleading.
000655: Suggested changes: A more non-traditional design.
000657: Suggested changes: It is a waste to have a huge graphic on the front
page, that takes forever to load. You can't get to any info. without
at least 3 or 4 clicks.
000658: Suggested changes: I think that the "view" based system for accessing
the Penn Web is not very efficient. Also, I believe that the homepage
could be improved upon as far as appearance.
000659: Suggested changes:They are a bit dull. Backgrounds should not
interfere with text.
000663: Suggested changes: Introduce more links to useful information at other
Websites. More prominently displayed links to content rich sites on
Penn Web or located somewhere at Penn.
000668: Suggested changes:Category titles in the web pages, because titles do
not deliever the exact meaning about what people can expect after
clicking them.
000670: Suggested changes: The best way I can describe this is that you look
at the Stanford University Pages. I think they are the benchmark. I
find it often hard to find things on the Penn system; it's often not
intuitive where things are.
000676: Suggested changes:Please fix the on-line calendar. EVERYONE I've
spoken to hates it and is confused by it. It doesn't have important
events and dates, and is of no use to the student body. Also, please
post a final exam schedule. Make events on campus (speakers, plays,
etc...) more prominent and easy to find.
000680: Suggested changes: The home page sometimes is no friendly and is
dificult to find especific information.
000681: Suggested changes: Most people do not know how the univ. is stuctured
but there is an assumption that one knows in the organization of
information.
000685: Suggested changes: Revised more often
000686: Suggested changes:Improve searchability put most used items
(directory, penn in touch) where they can be easily accessed
000689: Suggested changes:I would like to see the Daily Pennsylvanian as an
immediate option on the homepage.
000692: Suggested changes:Flashier introduction!
000698: Suggested changes: Giving the date that the information was last
revised
000700: Suggested changes: Change "view" system. Add to Library Resources.
Improve the way PennExpertise database works. ;Currently, for
example, clicking on faculty member links in the Econ department
homepage doesn't connect to PennExpertise. Have a virtual tour of
campus
000711: Suggested changes: Make the pages more visually appealing instead of
giving it a formal and academic look. The look of the page reflects
Penn's perceived image ... make it an exciting one for Penn's sake.
000714: Suggested changes: It's difficult to find a page where all the URL's
of different student groups are listed. The search button doesn't
help.
000722: Suggested changes: Drop the "select a view" Add more
alumni-specific information
000723: Suggested changes: it's good but could be better-- the basic homepage
needs updating more frequently. the homecoming picture has been up
for a long time. too long.
000724: improved manuverability and better search engine
000725: Suggested changes:Perhaps have student organizations' meeting times
and locations posted.
000727: Suggested changes: Design Change. Change "views" to something
different.
000733: Suggested changes: The Penn Web needs a MUCH better search engine.
You might want to consider Excite. It's free and it works well.
000735: Suggested changes: make the organization or breakdown of links more
consistent. Ex. It took me forever to find where specific academic
department homepages are. Are they in Student Views Faculty Schools
000736: Suggested changes:Provide real information about living options ie.
Community House and PennQuest
000737: Suggested changes:easier to find things...the search isnt that good.
better graphics
000739: Suggested More publicity on the information available and the
addresses these can be found at. Easier surfing.
000740: Suggested changes: make the updated version of netscape more available
for downloading...i tried to do it myself but it didn't work and
that's the only version that will work to see the course timetable
and the scanner, etc.
000742: Suggested changes: nothing specific, but I think the nature of the web
is to change, and change often.
000747: Suggested changes: It's basically fine, but I think you should add the
ability of personal homepage users to have CGI script access for the
mail.sas server
000748: Suggested changes: I feel it is important for the university to
keep up with useful innovations in web publishing and information
services. I feel some of the university sites are more developed than
others. With proper security measures, I feel offering more services
over the web (like access to penntrex, dining, university housing,
office of the registrar, &c.) would be very useful. The "view" format
of the homepage contains many redundancies and I sometimes question
the usefulness of it. Why not have one menu from which all visitors
can choose A photographic tour of the campus would be a nice
addition, although not completely necessary.
000749: Suggested changes: The Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major needs
to get a good web page going.
000750: Suggested changes:Just more stuff. the more the better.
000751: Changes: I think each professor should have their own webpage. I'm
part of a group of students called Web Support Services, and our goal
is to teach professors html so that every class, hopefully, can have
it's own webpage. Our services are free, and I feel that it will
benefit everyone here at Penn to be able to find class information
directly on the web. The URL of Web Support Services is: http:
dolphin.upenn.edu webinfo index.html
000757: Suggested changes: more impressive graphics, add wharton homepages
000760: Suggested changes: a bit more organized and easy to navigate I
really like what the Bioengineering Lab did using frames any way we
could start registering for classes through the web
000762: Suggested changes: Test of changes.
000764: Suggested changes: Stronger search utility. Path to alphabetical list
of departments/offices should be more clearly identified.
000768: Suggested changes: i know it is difficult and many people look at it
different ways, but i think ease and quickness of finding desired
information is the most important design aspect for the system
000769: Suggested changes: Try to implement guidelines for Penn sites. For
example, everytime I try to access the athletic department site my
computer crashes because my web broser candle handle the frames.
Sites should have a variety of ways to view them that could be part of
a guideline.
000776: Suggested changes: See comments above
000777: Suggested changes: see the above It needs to be functional from a
business perspective. Security should be an issue addressed as well.
I would like to see online registration for classes and current
schedules They may exist but I havent found them
000779: Suggested changes: LIVE CAMS ACROSS CAMPUS!
000785: Suggested changes: It's good that there are catagories, but maybe
there is a way to have a page with long lists that people can easily
go to and just find what they need in alphabetical order...
000786: Suggested changes: More Direct link from Index to Ovid Assurance that
information from Source institutions, i.e. computer connection is
current with current prices. Better computer solution support for
computer like Penn Print out but more practically oriented Better
solution support for network development for departments to aid
planning.
000787: Suggested changes: better graphic design
000788: Suggested changes: Improved search features.
000790: Suggested changes: Accessing information too cryptic. It
should be much easier and quicker to get from Penn Homepage to a
desired piece of information. For example, One should not have to
guess which link to click to get to the next level. Similar info
should be grouped together. Better coordination with the individual
schools would help.
000791: Suggested changes: should also include info on events in the
neighbourhood of philadelphia i.e safety guides, festivities etc.
000796: Already filled out the whole survey, but one more suggestion: hotlink
directory information e-mails with mailto: URLs.
000800: Suggested changes: * Navigation via keyboard since using the mouse
slows the process considerably. * Status line w/ page numbering on
longer documents presently requires guessing.
000802: Suggested changes: more interactive, pictures of campus and events
on-line (I think you had that a few years ago) better search engine
000805: Suggested changes: Liked your old home page much better
000807: Suggested changes: a nicer (more sophisticated) home page (the front
page)
000811: Suggested changes: I don't really favor the "view" method...I find
it strange that the library is a top choice on the faculty view,
but a much lower choice of the student view. Why not just let the
user decide what they prefer. It is probably much less maintenance
to have one well-thought out view. I don't often find what I seek
using the search mechanism.
000813: Better Search Engine and that information is up to date
000818: Suggested changes: I would like to see, on each UPenn page published
by an administrative department. The email address of the person
responsible for the content of each page. The frequency of page
content update. The date of the last content update. A button
for adding the given page to a person's Web-page subscription service.
000822: Suggested changes: A search engine that indexes keywords in head,
title, and meta tags on _all_ of the official web servers
on campus.
000828: Suggested changes: better search engine, more attractive "look &
feel"
000830: Suggested changes: There is not enough information accessible from
the top level. Sometimes it takes four or five levels to find
fairly basic information. For example, I didn't even know the Penn
Directory existed until I saw a link from someone's personal
homepage. I would have no idea how to find it through Penn's main
page I just added a link from my homepage so that I know how to get
to it when I need it.
000833: Suggested changes: Organize by topic/function/purpose instead of by
demographic group.
000834: Suggested changes: Make searching directory easier.
000835: Suggested changes: A system for dynamically updating information.
000837: Suggested changes: True accuracy of information, and more official
sites for information sharing links, rather than repeated, incorrect
info, such as Course Listings. Instead of everyone putting their
info about another department, how about just links to that
department, especially if they have the real info.
000840: Suggested changes: It is not easy trying to locate undergraduate
information on financial aide. I believe that these things should be
linked to any and all undergraduate information.
000841: Suggested changes:Have greater search options. Some words are not
identified and thus do not provide links.
000842: Suggested changes: More coherent front page
000849: Suggested changes: even though I've gotten used to it, I still don't
really like the whole view idea.
000854: Suggested changes: Add a section called Services or Operations where
dining and vending and catering can be found, perhaps a hospitality
services branch.
000857: Suggested changes: Make the information easier to access.
000860: Suggested changes: Eliminate the view system. Get a better search
engine.
000863: Suggested changes:sometimes, i found the fucntion 'search' being
difficult to use because i did not know what kind of key words would
work. And sometimes the results were not relevant to the key words
at all. and please include as many information about penn as
possible. and please include latest news about penn.
000865: Suggested changes: Make it better, more up-to-date, accurate
000869: Suggested changes: Search engine
000870: Suggested changes: I think that there needs to be an easier flow to
finding information, perhaps a more comprehensive index.
000872: Suggested changes: eliminate the views - find some consistent
organizing principles
000874: Suggested changes: many of the pages need to be updated more
frequently and to be a little more detailed, because often the
information is no longer useful or not specific enough.
000875: Suggested changes: The calendar never seems to be up to date or
accurate. I would like to see it post the many many events such as
coffe houses, performing arts, sports, activities, concerts, local
plays, lectures, readings, exhibiyts. All the info that is available
on the "November at Penn" hard copies or is posted on the walk should
be on the net as well.
000877: Suggested changes: See above -- but also: 1. The search mechanism
should be improved. Most searches I make on the Penn Web are
fruitless. At the same time people should be much better
informed about robots searching and indexing their Web pages. The
Math Dept uses the standard robots.txt file to guide (polite)
robots. But my guess is that most people who create Web pages are
completely unaware of the issues and difficulties. Our default is
to request that robots not search any personal Web pages. 2. Delete
out-of-date links. For instance, search the Penn Web for "summer".
Most of what you get is out-of-date (or worse, out-of-date and
undated, so you only learn it is worthless after you make further
efforts).
000878: Suggested changes: Clearer Penn homepage, more rational menus, better
search tool.
000880: Suggested changes:I would like a clearer system for figuring out how
to find information on the Penn Web.
000888: Suggested changes: (1) Better search engine. Search more. Eliminate
duplicates. Allow Boolean conditions. Update certain areas which
typically change a lot more frequently. Feature searching as a way to
get around, by making it more prominent on the main page(s). (2) Get
rid of the "views" (3) I'm biased because I work there, but still:
include a link to the DP, even though it's independent, because it's
one of the largest student activities on campus, and the most-read
publication on campus -- and students, faculty, staff, alumni, and
prospective students all want to find it. The DP gets a lot of
complaints from people in all these groups that it isn't listed on the
Penn Web.
000896: Suggested changes: more powerful - for example no one would ever by
able to find my homepage. I often look up information at other
schools as part of my job. I think Yale has the most user friendly
page. Stanford is also nice. (Let me know if you find my HP.)
000898: Suggested changes: More up to date info
000903: Suggested changes: I personally find it somewhat confusing to access
the library or data bases from home and my office. There is two
different methods to do this depending where I am. I relize that this
will take some adjustment as well as time and experience, but a "tips"
sheet on the differnt formats of data bases would be extreemly
helpful.
000905: Suggested changes: I would like to see a quick link to the campus map.
Also, the map needs to be updated and more detailed.
000906: Suggested changes: I want to see a nicer main page. The stupid
Homecoming picture is dated and tiresome. What happened to good old
Ben? When we have pictures of sports or the relays or whatever, we
perpetuate the idea that Penn is more pro sports than pro academics.
Also, Judith Rodin's page is most pretentious.
000913: Suggested changes: Updated more often for accuracy
000915: Suggested changes: Frames, more graphics, new openeing screen ,
chanbge index system.
000916: Suggested changes: Since Penn is an Ivy league school I think that
they should check and see what other schools who are more advanced
with their technology on the www for suggestions about how to
improve the current page. I think that the whole university should
have an email address. This avoids a lot of phone calls and the
response to email seems to be faster than coming in person to
someone's office.
000926: Suggested changes: Get Wharton to list student homepages like all the
other schools do!
000928: Suggested changes: The search function should be modified. When I
type something like: Office of the University Registrar, I get a list
of links that aren't even related to what I'm looking for. It's very
frustrating.
000931: Suggested changes: I know there is a big push to get the "newest"
information up ASAP, but in a recent event, I couldn't find out when
my finals were for THIS semester, because here we are in November, and
they had been replaced by the tentative schedule for next semester.
As far as I can tell it was impossible to find this semester's finals
schedule from the links provided in the student view...I eventually
went to the registrars office...did a double back flip...guessed at
what the old file would've been called...and lucked out...
000943: Suggested changes: On the opening page I think that there should be
more explanation of each item. i.e. what will I see if I go to
students, or prospective students.
000944: Suggested changes: improved, robust search engine accuracy
timeliness of information
000946: Suggested changes: directory listing, ex. when I go to students, the
list is too long. It is hard to find something
000948: Suggested changes: Re-arrange home page - classified approach to data
sources.
000949: Suggested changes: Make pages faster and get more important
information.
000950: Suggested changes: on main page, have an option titled UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENTS that link to a list of ALL departments at PENN.
000952: More easy access to department pages and course pages
000955: Suggested changes: chang the system structure
000959: Suggested changes: Needs to be easier to find info without knowing
who owns it, i.e., what administrative unit is responsible for it
... often the only way to find info is to know it in advance, it
seems...
000961: Suggested changes:nudie pics
000966: Suggested changes: make home page easier to use. I find that "view"
stuff confusing. I would rather have a simpler, more "logical"
listing than have someone else decide what info should go under
"faculty," "students," or whatever. I have had a lot of trouble
finding a full academic calendar I shouldn't have to grope around
for something like that.
000967: Suggested changes: easier, more robust searching on ALL the PENN
pages
000969: Suggested changes: student e-mail adresses accesible on the web
000970: Suggested changes: More current info, the site is good, but feels as
if was put up and not changed much after.
000971: Customizable startup page. Different search pages (search different
types of information). When I search I often get the same pages listed
a couple of times. It's not really that terrible, but it's kind of
annoying.
000979: Suggested changes: Improve the search engine. Put a wider variety of
info on thw Web. (Many times I do not find what I want.)
000980: Suggested changes: Shopping info, Philly info, septa info, etc.
000986: Suggested changes: I really haven't used the Penn Web very much but
all Web pages need to be changed.
000987: Suggested changes: Better phone and email directory is necessary
000990: Suggested changes: work w/the webmasters for each individual school
(like susan quant from sas, etc.) in order to improve penn web user
friendliness/efficiency. as of now, too many layers to go through.
000991: Suggested changes: more information available regarding graduate
student career planning with restricted access. Web much faster and
better. I can then access from home on breaks as well.
000994: Suggested changes: Updates should be made every 2-3 weeks on the Penn
home page. Departments should update their pages every 4-5 weeks.
000996: I'd like to see more highlights more often on the front page. Perhaps
headlines from the DP or the Almanac. And maybe even a search form on
the front page as well.
000997: Suggested changes:Easier links (not so many in-between links from
the start to my destination)
001001: Suggested changes: better search capability
001007: Suggested changes: The search should allow to chose an index of
www.upenn.edu OR www.seas.upenn.edu OR www.sas.upenn.edu OR ...
001008: Suggested changes: more updates
001014: Suggested changes: Utilization of More Advanced Web Browsers while
trying to maintain quick loading of pages. (e.g. convert the resliv
graphic to a smaller jpg)
001015: Suggested changes: A search engine that actually retrieves what I'm
looking for. If I type in OPIM 1010, I should have the choice to go
to the OPIM 1010 homepage and not unrelated information. The same is
true with clubs such as WUSA where I should have as the first hit
WUSA's homepage and not about Wharton Alumni facilities.
001016: Suggested changes: I think the PENN Web should be more technically up
to date(easily said, I know) and, it is also very important for the
site to be attractive. Perhaps a PENN Web design competition?(We have
a Graduate school full af talented people.) Links to the various
student Web galleries would be nice.
001017: Suggested changes: improve search capabilities
001021: Suggested changes: better search, more complete directory, ability
to register for classes via Internet
001022: Suggested changes: Keep it up and keep us informed.
001023: Suggested changes: Can't get to Ice Rink pages without using the
search engine. Why not make it easier to find by parsing links?
001026: Suggested changes: More graphics of campus, some of the links are
very bare
001028: Suggested changes: i definitely liked the main menu picture of the
quad better than that ben franklin
001035: Suggested changes: Easier to get started.
001045: Suggested changes: Make it easier when we have to input student
information-- like changes to address, grades, financial aid , etc.
They're way too NOT user-friendly.
001047: Suggested changes: Getting current information is often a problem.
Try to keep all the information updated. It's better to offer less,
but current information than to offer extensive amounts of old
informaiton.
001048: better flow - figure out which pages are hit the heaviest, and link
them.... A prominent link to the callenar, or searching for students
would be helpful Change the search bfeature to find more sources,
or be able to look at the second fifty matches.
001049: Suggested changes: I would like to see the initial homepage change.
001061: Suggested changes: Please hire a interface designer
001069: Suggested changes: a better search
001076: Suggested changes:housing info was difficult to locate at first.
Would be useful to have a diagram and description of the size of the
rooms, e.g. do they all have extra-long twins? That is an important
factor for me. How about air conditioning? What about putting
faculty evaluations and course descriptions on the web?
001078: Suggested changes: A tour of the campus for new prospective students
and new students, as well as a historical tour for those who want to
learn more about the history of penn.
001079: Suggested changes: clearer links and more of them.
001081: Suggested changes: I think the Penn Web should be updated more often,
more course information should be posted on it, and athletic schedules
should be posted on it..
001086: Suggested changes: more "news"...maybe a daily headline or set of
headlines about university-related important stuff...I hate the
DP...it sucks
001090: Suggested changes: Better navigation. It is not easy to find the
information you want. Better searching within the Penn Web.
001091: Suggested changes: make search routines more robust, shorter response
time
001096: Suggested changes: This is trivial, but the link to the Penn
directory should be more direct. Since 99% of the people accessing
it are looking for information and don't need to change their
faculty address, it is silly to have the choice of looking up names
be the second of three options. Once you choose the Directory from
the Student View page, you should link directly to the directory
search engine, with choices about information, etc. listed at the
bottom of THAT page. Also, USE TABLES. (I know they're a pain in
HTML code, but they're worth it.) It would also be nice to have
the whole course catalog (with descriptions) on-line in a timely
manner. (I know that limitations for this are beyond the control of
website managers.)
001101: Suggested changes: I think the Penn web pages are very week. They
should be better organized, add JavaScripts, ActiveX, video, etc.
They should take advantage of the latest technologies. Possibly even
make a lesser bandwith version also for the modem people.
001108: Suggested changes: It would be nice to have a search option for
those things that are difficult to catagorize. Maybe a class or
booklet can be put out to explain the who, what, when, where and
how's.
001109: Suggested changes: I've found it difficult to find the academic
calendar for upcoming years. It would be great if this were easier
to find.
001111: Suggested changes: take advantage of newer software technology to
create a more dynamic, interactive style of web pages
001114: Suggested changes: Information is not clearly catalogued. The Index
need to be expanded to include topics Penn e-mail directory should be
updated by a central office every time an employee transfers, leaves
or joins the Penn community.
001118: Suggested changes: Make the library services easier to use
001121: Suggested changes: Currency and accuracy is essential. I see a lot
of inconsistency in terms of currency of data among departments.
001122: Suggested changes: A better organized hierarchical system of topics.
001126: Suggested changes: Maybe have tables try and avoid long lists such
as in the student section Try and sub-divided info on page a little
better it would be useful being able to search using phone numbers
in the directory and have the same listing as in the printed version
(ie home addresses)
001129: Suggested changes: Organizing information by school (e.g., job
information, program information for alumni) instead of by category is
not the way an outsider visiting Penn's Web Site would search for
information. Thus, if I was an adult student looking for continuing
graduate education, I would be first interested in all of the
programs, and secondly where they are located. The same is true about
jobs at Penn - if I was looking for a job as a systems programmer, I
would want to know all of the opportunities, and then where it is
located, not the other way around. This basic orientation is no longer
appropriate, with the way people now look for information.
001131: Suggested changes: make it better to best.
001135: Suggested changes: Change overall Setup - less long lists, concise
menus
001139: Suggested changes: The view system The search engine Removal of old
outdated material
001142: Suggested changes: a more updated/flashy page. i know flash is not the
end all be all but it gives the surfer confidence in the page.
001147: Suggested changes: too many links to get to the items I use. e.g., I
use it often to get phone number or address of a student in my class:
I have to go through several links.
001151: Suggested changes: Perhaps a cover page with greater impact
001158: Suggested changes: Remove the view system. It is confusing at best,
and more frequently impenetreble. Deliver content first, second and
third, and then maybe worry about cute additions such as video clips
(though I cannot believe anybody will choose your school based upon
the 10 second quicktime video you produce), and certainly no graduate
student, faculty or staff could care.
001159: Suggested changes: keep current, grow, change is inevitable
001163: Suggested changes: Allow school to control the format, make it easier
to acssess information for non-Penn people
001164: Suggested changes: reorganize the constituent views system
001170: Suggested changes: logical order. a fast way to find course home
pages without having to search through the individual departments and
teachers to find the page
001178: Suggested changes: Make it easer to find things. Get rid of confusing
headings.
001182: Suggested changes: Can always be better
001186: Suggested changes: Sports Pages with extremely fast updates for games
in progress
001194: Suggested changes: Get rid of the view system. Also, some cool
video/audio multimedia would be great...
001206: Suggested changes: Keep all aspects of the Penn Web as current as
possible.
001207: Suggested changes: I would like to see a comprehensive list of events
at Penn, including performances, lectures, etc. At the moment,
Calendar is not complete.
001214: Suggested changes: on the home page there could be a link to event
happening that week or month
001217: Suggested changes: I'm not too fond of the constituency buttons, I
find them confusing. Apart from suggesting frames as the architecuter
of the pages, I'm not sure how else to organize the information.
Also, being active in the College of General Studies in SAS, I feel
that the way evening programs, and non-credit programs offered here at
Penn are listed. There should be a listing for credit, noncredit and
continuing education (Wharton Evening, CGS,Dynamics, etc.) so that
they would be easy to find.
001219: Suggested changes: I want the old format back.
001228: Suggested changes: Fix the search engine.
001232: Suggested changes: I like it but it needs better interface. more
movies lte pre-frosh be able to look at it and say "WOW"
001236: Suggested changes: Better search facilities
001238: Suggested changes: more recent updates on event/intouch information
001240: Suggested changes: Consistency with Web Pages and Accuracy. All too
often, I have seen pages put up on Penn's Web and they are never
updated. Take for insistence the web page on vendors put up by Penn
Acquisition Services. This was event- ually abandoned because of
resources needed to update. These resources needed to be included
with the resources to set up a web page.
001242: Suggested changes: A more logical reorganization of the web pages.
001247: Suggested changes: Better searching
001248: Suggested changes:Change the view system. I'd be interested in
seeing views by type of information rather than based on what my
background might be.
001249: Suggested changes: You should keep it up to date with what is
currently going on at PENN. For example, Homecoming was more than two
weeks ago and the picture of Jasen Scott is still there. I am at Penn
so i know what is going on but what about those people who are
prospects as students. I believe Penn should use its web page to
paint a picture of PENN and how it plans to achieve more in the
future. Basically i mean sell it better. Shows students what Penn
has to offer them.
001253: Suggested changes: The link to the M&T web page is difficult to find.
ISB has direct access following a short description. Why not M&T?
001261: Suggested changes: I did not answer no to 15, because I believe that
there are always improvements that can be made. I do not have any at
this time though.
001264: Suggested changes: A more comprehensive front page to direct visitors
unfamiliar with the "views" format. Include more links to various
pages, perhaps those most commonly accessed.
001267: Suggested changes: Links are much too vague, and so they should be
made easier to use. It should also have a section listing major
upcoming events (e.g. important people coming to campus).
001268: Suggested changes: start by choosing school including a general for
things commong to Penn (registrar, residences...), then by function:
calendar, events, classes, admissions, etc.
001269: Suggested changes: put on some more sports, music, extracurricular
activities in general, have a Mac archive of software to download.
001273: Suggested changes:more current athletic information
001275: Suggested changes: Better linkages with other pages (other IVY's
information resources [Princeton has Brittanica On-Line ]
001283: Suggested changes: I think that there should be a department view in
which each of the department are listed and then their requirments
for a major or minor, as well as the courses they are offering and
links to those course home pages and the professors home page.
001284: Suggested changes: It could be spruced up a bit graphically. More
energetic. Navagating should be clearer.
001290: Suggested changes: Greater interactvity
001291: Suggested changes: I think the design should be better. COmpared to
otehr schools on the Web, i thin we could do a lot better. Especially
Harvard.
001293: Suggested changes: Many times I have searched for events on the web
that I know have occured or will occur that are not listed anywhere on
Penn web. I believe that one system should keep a conclusive list of
all events.
001299: Suggested changes: Efficient web links to specific pages. Eg, I can't
even access an application form to the GSE.
001302: Suggested changes: simpler menus under "students" and other such
categories quicker ways to getr to individual home pahes
001303: Suggested changes: in a way it's too hard to get around...
001304: Suggested changes: Offer the most often-viewed items (like Academic
Calendar or Football Schedule) on 1st page
001306: Suggested changes: An updated centralized listing of events for the
Wharton School!!!
001308: Suggested changes: Better listing of available sites. For example, in
order to find Penn in Touch, a widely used site, one must first find
it. Popular sites like that or others should be on the main pages
index for easy location.
001318: The new mailto: URLs in the directory are cool -- but you guys
replaced the header ones that skip with # references down to the
right person with mailto:'s as well!
001322: Suggested changes: It should be easier to find the department home
pages of specific departments e.g. math/ CSE etc
001326: Suggested changes: I would like to see student services such as
housing and dining publish rates, calendars, etc so that services use
the web as an important site to store information, not just an
advertiser. I also think the "view' system shoudl be changed. As a
staff member, and graduate student who works with international
students, I use the web for all kinds of information and I never know
under which "view" to look.
001328: Suggested changes: Graphic is too heavy on the home page, a FREQUENT
university problem. I like graphics and image- maps, but good design
doesn't have to be bulky. Your home page is.
001329: Suggested changes:the search engine sucks, totally it simply sucks in
more ways than I can explain....but basically, you either get nothing,
or way too many hits and there is no way to appropriately restrict the
search to what you want (at least from what I've found) Also, it
*really* sucks that the old copies of the almanac are not available
through the search engines as all! and when you look for students
homepages who are in sas, you don't get a link to the homepage, just a
link to the SAS student hompage homepage.
001330: Suggested changes:More consistent quality of entries in terms of
information content. Better design of hierarchy: Why is the Faculty
Senate buried somewhere? Why is the Medical Student Government even
better buried (hint: it's in the index of personal home pages!)?
001331: Suggested changes: easier and quicker navigation of people affiliated
with university through employment (i.e. people who work for howard
hughes institute but have mail through penn). these poeple are often
hard to track.
001332: Suggested changes: I wish there was an icon for library services
on the first Penn Web page.
001337: Suggested changes: Redo the separate view system and have one index
for all Penn community members.
001342: Suggested changes: I would like to see all of the information be
updated every six or so weeks. Some of the pages for departments are
outdated and misleading.
001343: Suggested changes: Make the online search directory for student and
faculty information (including email addresses) easier to use.
001346: Suggested changes: should be much easier to navigate. I really
dislike the image map set-up on the main page because I find it very
difficult to figure out which category to select to find the
information I want. I also just don't like the premise of image-map
based browsing at all (not text-friendly, too slow to access.)
001349: Suggested changes: Don't like the view system
001356: Suggested changes: Alumni directory
001361: Suggested changes: HR Dept should be accessed by WEB and surfers
should be able to put resume on-line for the positions they are
interested in. I submitted my resume in about 2 months ago "in paper"
but only recently got a card reading "it is referred to specialist".
Year is 1996 and this is an academy.
001365: Suggested changes: Make it a little easier to navigate and use
001367: Suggested changes: You should start incorporating a database into
your pages, that way, people can view your pages in the format that
they want, not by the format you decide.. Just a little more
user-definable. If you want an example, have a look at the
BioEngineering Lab here at Penn. http://bioeng.seas.upenn.edu/ulab/
001375: Suggested changes: The menus should be made more intuitive. Also,
there is little information that is directly of use to an alumnus.
001381: Suggested changes: More consistent and regular updates, especially to
policy information. In addition, a way to know if/when updates have
been made.
001382: Suggested changes: List the selections on the home page more clearly.
For instance, instead of faculty and colleagues worldwide, maybe link
to a campus directory or list the schools, then departments, etc.
001383: Suggested changes: better searching
001385: Suggested changes: Nothing specific in mind- I just think almost
everything should be progressive.
001387: Suggested changes: I would like to see a complete and accurate list of
the final exam schedual...I couldn't find it. Also, I would like to
see easier access to the penn departmental list server (the one where
you can find individual course home pages)
001389: Suggested changes: Improve database searching.
001394: Suggested changes: Get rid of the view system
001397: Suggested changes: The home page is confusing as to where to actually
find information you are looking for.
001400: Suggested changes: Add registering for courses capability and course
database.
001405: Suggested changes: easier to find info
001406: Suggested changes: Items linked to the Penn Web should been uniformly
updated
001412: you should be able to search for students easier, and the other
servers such as dolphin and futures should be more readily accessible
001413: Suggested changes: The most important change (and I know it's a big
one) is the fact that the graphics just aren't that impressive. If
you check out other university pages there are some incredible
layouts and designs. It's horrible to say, but aesthetically, the
page shoulf be much more appealing. After all, the page will serve
those teenagers considering universities, and to be blunt, I'm not
sure Penn's webpage is even coming close to impressing them.
001417: Suggested changes: A clarified linking system
001418: Suggested changes: Human Resource web page is very limited and never
updated. The Benefits office has very little presence and there is no
search engine for HR and Benefits. Confusing and unfriendly the HR
and Benefits office is, the web page reflects it all
001420: Suggested changes:1.The 3 views are miserable to use. 2. If there is
official information mounted, it must be current and accurate. If it
cannot be maintained it should not be there at all.
001424: Suggested changes: strong committment to currency of the information
and a comprehensive search engine that can locate most relevant pages
based on complex keyword search (I would not expect the search to go
to departmental web servers/pages, rather those that are part of the
"core" set provided by ISC and other university-level organizations).
001425: More detailed course information, Specific exam timess/places for
indiviual courses.
001426: Suggested changes: The real point of the web is horizontal linkage,
as opposed to the heieerachical structure of a standard printed
document. Much of the Penn site is a direct transctiption of the
printed brochures---lengthy text structured with headings and
larded with photographs. Thhere are exceptions, such as the view
pages. But the brochure style pages are really missing an
opportunity.
001428: Suggested changes: Replace the initial "view page" with a long list of
choices in alphabetical order.
001430: Suggested changes: The cover picture could be updated more often or
put up something that is relevant for more than a few weeks.
001432: Suggested changes: Make the "Explore a View" screen more intuitive to
new users
001448: Suggested changes: make it easier for someone starting at the "top" to
find desired information
001451: Suggested changes: Compared to other institutions (e.g. Stanford), I
find it difficult to navigate the Penn Web pages. The major problem
with the Penn pages is their assumption that one is familiar with the
school structure. Thus, to find a personal web page of someone in
the chemistry department, one has to know to go to SAS first. There
should be a way to go to department web pages directly from the Penn
home page. In addition, information about faculty members,
department offerings, etc. should be well presented and standardized
within reason. There is an expectation that the web will have
information about research intersests, publications, etc. about its
faculty. This is not always easy to find.
001452: Suggested changes: Make it easier to find information. Make it easier
to navigate toward the right information. The list are just a
collection of topics not organized in any way. For instance under
student: undergraduates: There is a long list that is not grouped in
any way or is not alphabetically. I think a grouping according to
topics such as : Academics (classes, registration, ..) Research
opportunities, Career development Living etc would make it easier
to find info quickly
001461: Suggested changes: I think that the "explore-a-view" page doesn't make
for a seamless entry into the information and I have more than once
quit because I could find the information I wanted. In my opinion,
people are looking for information and want to be presented with a
menu of how to find the information rather than exploring from a
particular viewpoint.
001465: Suggested changes: Highest on my list would be a different
organization for the first page. I don't like the "constituency view"
system. Then I would like a better search tool. I don't get very good
results with the current one. For one thing options often come up
double. I would like to see the yellow pages of the phone directory
on-line with links to office home pages (if any). I would also like to
see an index of home pages - for "official" ones.
001466: Suggested changes: Easier navigation
001471: Suggested changes: It is unimpressive (compared to competing
institutions) and very hard to find information, especially critical
information. The Academic Calendar is forever incomplete and out of
date, for instance. For impressing the outside world, a much
flashier, graphical page is needed.
001473: Suggested changes: Clarity and architecture need improvement. I'd
like to see stronger information about the region (museums, for
example).
001477: Suggested changes: keep up to date. I dont really care for the
views. Have more for community to look at like educational pages for
course materials.
001484: Suggested changes: Need an opening page that makes it easier to find
what I need. The Penn Index is more useful as an opening page.
001485: Suggested changes: More listings and cross-listings of information
available. That way you have a higher chance of getting to the
information you want. Also, a significantly better search engine
would be useful. A freshness-dating stamp that expires on some
reasonable time scale would be good.
001488: Suggested changes: Start with simple, obvious categories and
subdivide naturally and unambiguously. Let crosslinks, not your web
menu organization, send the user to related information. It is
currently almost impossible to figure out how to get to the
up-to-date info you need quickly. In an attempt to be "user-friendly"
to every conceivable kind of user, all are left confused.
001490: Suggested changes: Please, change the view system to make it more
intuitive!!!!
001491: Suggested changes: Better links to web pages across the University.
For example, the Chemistry home page and faculty listings are not
linked to the main Penn Faculty Web Site. Accurate e-mail addresses
of faculty members would also be helpful.
001492: Suggested changes: Rethink the core site pages.
001494: Suggested changes: Get rid of the views, don't use graphics for things
like bullets and HR (horizontal rules) use client side imagemaps if
you are going to use imagemaps. Get rid of the views (Oh did I
mention that already... well it is STUPID and makes things hard to
find, we are looking for information and not a "perspective" or view.)
Failure to use forms to enable things like PennInTouch to do
registration on line, etc. Get rid of the views. (Ok, I've said it
enough, but your crazy idea lead the law school to do the same thing
making their pages just as worthless.) Also, departments don't
always put phone numbers/e-mail addresses up on their pages making
contacting them hard. Use forms more often to enable user input
and surveys. E.g. pennintouch vs paris registration... Verify
links on a regular basis. Frequently links [internal even] are
disfunctional esp if they are running CGI's and most embarassingly,
many of these are inside computer support departments pages, e.g.
DCCS and ISC...
001496: Suggested changes: Less hassle to reach the information desired.
Faster accessibility to different pages.
001497: Suggested changes: Colors -- do not like the yellow and the first page
is somewhat boring even though the photo changes occasionally, just
isn't exciting.
001504: Suggested changes: Alumni email addres and updates on alumni by year
001509: Suggested changes: more pictures of the university
001516: Suggested changes: update more often
001517: Suggested changes: Easier to navigate
001524: Suggested changes: Results of directory search should be more
detailed to make it easy to determine what information is relevent.
001528: Suggested changes: The image should be updated more often. The
Homecoming one was up for a considerable amount of time after it was
over
001529: Suggested changes: Make sure that outsiders do not get lost, and
that graduate and undergraduate information is clearly separated.
Make sure that all of the links are active and correct.
001530: Suggested changes: Well, it should be constantly upgraded, and more
personnel are probably needed to help implement new uses. For example,
it took me 2/3 of the semester to get the UCLA system - already
avbailable for downloading, but using scripts which I could not
implement myself - called Virtual Office Hours operational just on a
trial basis for my Fall course, Chem 241. The same system was
implemented in 2 weeks' time at Widener University, where my wife is
Chair of Chemistry, for all of the Chemistry courses in their
Department. And I still don't have such things as restriction of
access to the Pen domain. The Libary databases ought to be Netscaped,
not Telnet.
001534: Suggested changes: I don't think the organization is great,
especially with regard to our access to informative sites outside of
Penn. Let's face it, the real beaty of the web is its links to the
outside. The information about penn itself is a nice convenience,
and therefore should be accurate and up to date, but more attention
should be paid to educating people about what is availabe as well
from outside the university via the web. I wuld also like to see more
forums that help keep users up to date on the advances of the various
technologies so that we can more efficiently use our web browsers,
computers, web sites etc.
001540: Suggested changes: Update the directory with local telephone numbers.
Many of the numebrs are old, parent's addresses or numbers, or not
even available
001549: Suggested changes: More information on campus Information on Daily
events including seminars and lectures that are held on campus should
be posted on that day. Upcoming events Sports events and so on that
are generally up to-date Important news events
001551: Suggested changes: better graphics
001553: Suggested changes: An easier way to get around. If I want to view a
certain department, I would like to click to get to a listing of
departments in the college, not select a student or teacher or
potential student and weave my way there.
001554: Suggested changes: links to porno pages on the web
001555: Suggested changes: Research information. I think we need some
consistent way for students to find ALL department and faculty Web
pages. This is especially important for those interested in choosing
a laboratory to do research in.
001558: Suggested changes:Clearer navigation, which is clear for people from a
varietty of viewpoints. THope page too roriented toward admissions
and PR, ie for people who will use it a couple of times. Need more
ooreientation toward staff and faculty who need to learn to use the
Web as an information resource insstead of the telephone. That is not
an easy task at the moment.
001560: Suggested changes: I find it strange that Penn has a category of
"faculty and colleagues world-wide" or something like that. If I want
to find colleagues elsewhere, I don't want to muddle through Penn's
lists first, or vice versa. I want to go straight to Penn faculty, or
straight to search engines that will take me to other institutions,
not muddle around in both. I also would like to search the Penn
libraries via net, e.g. via Netscape, but find I sometimes can't,
and get error messages. The libraries act like it's not their fault
that this doesn't work but I dislike the library search system
intensely, so I do things like go to my former institution (U. of
Washington) where I can search more easily, and then email myself the
library catalogue information (!). Seems weird that Penn can't
handle this, but the library people get defensive when I suggest
they ought to be able to do this.
001561: Suggested changes:More web pages for departments not currently listed
e-mail directory info easier to get to (directory links hard to follow
for me for some reason.
001562: Suggested changes: Just continue to update information
001563: Suggested changes: just needed a place to comment on the survey.
the boxes and circles for the choices are all graphically screwed up
for the second half of the survey... at least from my
machine/viewer.
001567: Suggested changes: I don't find the staff/faculty/student breakdown
as useful as a more general menu. I think things that are specific
to a particular group are fewer in number than things that are
applicable to all Penn people.
001569: Suggested changes: ensure text only capability is ALWAYS there,
deemphasize graphics (the intenet is already clogged, and the last
thing we need is to ship tons of 'cute' graphics when text clicking
gets it done faster)
001576: Suggested changes: More links to information such as phone numbers to
professors, outside Penn information, information on the west
Philadelphis community
001578: Suggested changes: I just want to see more things added over time and
things kept up to date but I'm confident that the pages will continue
to evolve and improve as everyone becomes more dependent on them.
001585: Suggested changes: easy way to look up friends in directory
001595: Suggested changes: It' important for me that we keep a text view
because with the modem situation\ it's hard to be online just for the
pictures (limited time, too many graphics==less work). Yet, I've had
comments from colleagues that our initial page is a bit too
2dimensional, maybe the happy medium doesn't satisfy a lot of us.
001596: Suggested changes: I would like to see the main home page changed. It
sort of bland. Also I think that there needs to be direct links from
the home page to the pages of Penn's various schools
001597: Suggested changes: a better search engine for the Penn Web itself
001598: Suggested changes: I think the university hompage could be
simpler--the layout is too "busy" and the overall effect is crowded.
But I like the changing pictures. The school homepages are better
laid out--yes I do like symmetrical organization!
001601: Suggested changes when changes are made to the system do not forget
the people with text only browsers.
001604: Suggested changes: an alternative to the 'views'. it looks good and is
useful in some situations, but there should _also_ be some sort of
semi-master list of pages After getting frustrated with 'views' I now
use 'Penn Index' or some bookmarks, but the index doesn't provide
enough detail
001605: Suggested changes: More efforts on ensuring that info is accurate
and current.
001615: Suggested changes:Improved usability and organization.
001617: Suggested changes: A better looking home page, with a short list of
items that make sense. As an analogy: imagine you are walking into a
building and you are not sure where you have to go in the building to
find the office you want. Something at the entrance should direct you
quickly to the right office (at least to the correct wing, or floor of
the building). Whatever directs you to the correct location has to
use names the way most people think of them (so if you want the
library, "books" would be a strange title, as would "faculty and
colleagues"). To my thinking, that's the way a home page should work.
001618: Suggested changes: I have no specific recommendations. However my
overall impression is that I have found it difficult to find
information which I believe should be easy to locate.
001621: Suggested changes: Should be a direct link to the library from the
cover page also should be clear penn-in-touch link, not buried where
it is now
001622: Suggested changes: More detail on admissions. Possibly a way to check
on application status. Also, some information on programs like
Franklin Scholars, etc.
001623: Suggested changes: Frequent checks by administration for obviously
obsolete links or information
001624: Suggested changes: more development of links you already do an
excellent job--keep it up!
001629: Suggested changes: Email for all depts presented on the web
pages..including coaches and deans. Alumni Search Engine for valid
Alumni search...(fee...I don't think so)
001632: Suggested changes: I would most like to see a change in the views
interface. All of the info is there, it's just hard to find
sometimes.
001636: Suggested changes: Keep it up to date and make it more attractive
001641: Suggested changes: shorter, more organized lists different graphic
-- the current one is annoying -- too many bright colors, also it is
hardly ever changed
001643: Suggested changes: better email capabilities especially in ability to
handle mime data
001644: Suggested changes: omit the redundancy between the views - the page
seems more complicated and convoluted than needed. Other
universities also provide "views", but not so many. Penn could use
fewer too.
001646: Suggested changes: I actually liked it better before the drastic
change to the blue background with the yellow, vague category
choices. the search driver is terrible and rarely finds what i want
easily.
001649: Suggested changes: A better link to the Med school pages need
more info on the individual programs
001653: Suggested changes:I think the search option should be made more
efficient
001656: Suggested changes: updated information in department home pages
001658: Suggested changes: Faster graphics on the main page - image map is
so slow that I always click "stop" before it loads and use links
below instead. Better look of the main page would not hurt either -
look at other Ivy schools pages, some of them (Columbia, Princeton).
My point is - either use good graphics or don't use it almost at all
to make the page at least fast. Aside from that, it's pretty good.
look better.
001663: Suggested changes: make it as simple as possible
001666: Suggested changes: More instructors should use the Penn Web as a
backup source for course materials.
001672: Current setup seems geared towards outsiders and not to Penn people.
It is sometimes hard to find information starting from Penn home
page.
001673: Suggested changes: Make the directory search easyer to find, i.e. put
it on the first page Expand the directory to include the med and vet
schools
001681: Suggested changes: see above comments.
001682: Suggested changes: It's often very difficult to find things. While
the search function has helped this, I think a more logical ordering
would help! For example, it's very difficult to find student
homepages on many of the schools' sites. Also, I have experienced
problems with information updates. I think a change in ordering and a
larger effort to keep the sites up to date (although this has gotten
much better this year) would really help improve the Penn Web.
001684: Suggested changes: The abillity to register for classes online
Also, the ability to search the offered courses by teacher by time and
an interactive sample schedule. (ie. type in times and
courses/teachers and get back closest possible sample schedule)
001688: Suggested changes: More up to date material. More presentable
material (So I can show friends what my school looks like) Penn Clip
Art
001691: Suggested changes: Make the different school and department
webpages accesable from the get go, not have to search like nuts to
get to a different school ,then to a different department.
001693: Suggested changes: I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO ACCESS PENN FOR LONGER
THAN TWO HOURS PER DAY WHEN OFF CAMPUS. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO SEE AN
EXPANSION OF THE OFFERED SEARCH ENGINES.
001695: Suggested changes: Update the software for the users off
campus.
001699: Suggested changes: make the links i access most available on the
main page. clean up hierarchy, links i expect to be under a "view",
aren't.
001705: Suggested changes: Pictures on homepage should be more interesting
and more reflective of Penn student life. For a long while, there
were pictures of construction around Penn on the first page. Even
when it was a picture of a student building something, I think maybe
someone volunteering in the community, it just looked like more
construction! We see enough construction everyday. I liked the
homecoming page and think that there are tons of other great images
that can be put up there. After all, the initial image should be a
very strong and positive one.
001706: Suggested changes: more concise information, things seem to be to
spread out and there is not enought links between departments that
share'causes'
001707: Suggested changes: Easier access to the class homepages.
001708: Suggested changes: i think it could be better looking, and less text
based. (too many long lists)
001709: Suggested changes: Make the views a secondary navigation option.
Group the information more functionally, and make the very popular
sites, such as admissions information and the Penn Directory,
painfully obvious. From the main page, make the link to the Calendar
take me directly to the main calendar view page, not an intermediate
page that lists the alternate views, etc. Put the alternate views on
the main calendar page, including the provider interface. Ditto for
the Directory. Basically, keep the number of mouse clicks between me
and the information I want at an absolute minimum.
001714: Suggested changes:I just don't want to get mixed up in alumni info
when I'm looking for quick info for student events only.
001715: Suggested changes: Access to more information. Not just abstracts but
full text articles. Feed back to specific offices, not just a
webmaster!
001716: Suggested changes: Create a consisten theme across all of homepages
for all of the schools. Anything connected to the Penn Web should
show consistency in design and usability.
001721: Suggested changes: Professors and TA's should all have homepages
dedicated to the classes they teach each semester. More exam and test
grades should be posted on the homepage of the department.
001729: Suggested changes: Continue improving: it's very good already. Quick
loading is very important for those of us with only modem access
Continue adding support for departments & individuals who are putting
up their own pages. Make a big effort to keep "directory" current.
Promote "PennExpertise" Put up some guidelines or suggestions for
"Intranet" applications by departments & schools. What's
practicable? Schedules, policies & procedures? Make available info on
maintaining a site using a data base for composing pages on the fly,
making it easier to revise and keep current.
001731: Suggested changes: I don't like the views. I find it harder to get
what I want.
001737: Suggested changes:easier way to find information (simpler Web
directory), and more up to date information on Campus events.
001745: Suggested changes: Make it easier to navigate. Make it easier to get
to individual school info (Wharton is not linked well to the Penn
pages)
001751: Suggested changes: Change is always good.
001755: Suggested changes: I have a question. Is there an easy way to use the
old whois search type and find address of people both inside and
outside the Penn community?
001758: Suggested changes: There is always room for change and improvement I
think clearer navigational instructions would be helpful, and you
really should have a research view, especially if you are trying to
promote the impression of a world class research institute, which I
believe Penn is.
001760: Suggested changes: Better search functions, more comprehensive web
page listings, the main homepage isn't very attractive compared to
other schools, should have a place for sports scores, events should be
listed more currently
001762: Suggested changes: quality control mechanism to ensure corrency and
timeliness of information posted deletions of outdated material
001765: Suggested changes: Make it look nicer. Make it easier to use.
001767: Suggested changes: update pages more frequently to reflect changes in
administrative decisions by the various schools and keep the
registrar page up to date as rigoursly as possible
001774: Suggested changes: I have listed them above.
001776: Suggested changes: If it were my money being spent on the Penn web,
I'd save it. Oh, wait... it is my money. Change everything! Just
kidding. Seriously, the Views thing is rather confusing and not very
helpful.
001783: Suggested changes:I would like to be able to be able to request that
further admissions information be sent to me but am having a difficult
time figuring ut how to do this if i even am able to.
001784: Suggested changes: More exhaustive and up to date
001785: Suggested changes:Take a look at other university pages. Make the
home page more appealing maybe with a picture of something significant
from campus
001787: Suggested changes: CGS Home page needs major revision. The font colors
can't be seen after a field has been selected. Furthermore, summer
sessions for the upcoming year don't appear on the web to well after
the printed catalogs are out. This is frustrating as CGS students need
to plan their time and tuition payments at least 6months prior to
taking a course.
001792: Suggested changes: See #14. Also, since Penn is making so concerted
an effort to keep its students in touch with the cutting edge of
cyberspace, why not share it with us ancients? (I am hobbling along
in Knoxville with an AA in computer science, and would love updates,
and a chance to partake at a reasonable cost.)
001800: Suggested changes: The Bookstore Page is completely out of date. I
realize that there are extenuating circumstances, however, the
out-of-date parts could be deleted.
001801: Suggested changes: Some were suggested above. Also, I understand
that a system was recently begun where faculty and staff would be
offered free assistance in developing web pages. That's a good start
if Penn wants to take seriously its commitment to providing current,
accessible, and attractive web- based information, it must provide
adequate support to make that happen.
001805: Suggested changes: Utilize the available technology to make an
attractive yet easy to use page. Make Penn Web worthy of its
affiliation with the University.
001808: Suggested changes: Greater consistency in terms of kinds of
information available on each page. I think a minimum standard with
the option to build up would be appropriate. I really like to have an
email address of a person to contact for further information.
001809: Suggested changes: I tried to find something about housing facilities
at Penn - I could not find it! It should be easier to find what you
are looking for, especially something as crucial as University
Housing.
001811: Suggested changes: Links to everywhere from the view pages. For
example, the "final exam calendar" is a joke. All it says is "there
are final exams from this date to that date. How about some real
information. A link to the registrar's final exam schedule is
non-existent - at least under the "exams" heading. The Penn Web should
be a starting place from which you can find everything, not just
things that the creators of the Penn Web itself have created.
001814: Suggested changes: information arragned by topic.
001818: Suggested changes: Have often been unable to access Web...site down
te down!
001819: Suggested changes: bring back the gopher
001823: Suggested changes:A logical front page where academic departments can
be reached logically
001824: Suggested changes: Drop the viewer's perspective. Assume that web
page is being read internationally, and make sure the public aspects
of the University--the museums, theaters, library bases, etc., are
prominent.
001826: Suggested changes: transcript ordering made easier
001832: Suggested changes: I would like to be able to access the library
database using the web and not telnet. I think it is important for
students to be able to renew their book and see what they have
checked out over the web. I do not like the way the warning
messages are setup on the registar's secured web page. It is
annouing to have to go to it time and time again, when you are trying
to get access to your transcript or your burser bill.
001834: Suggested changes: More details
001839: Suggested changes: No specific comments off-hand I generally like the
web site. I would encourage web engineers for Penn's site to
constantly browse other high-quality schools' sites to ensure
comparable quality and keep current on new design/organizatioal ideas.
001840: Suggested changes: 1. Directory of service units and services
offered. 2. An action "hot line" or "bulletin board" for emergencies
info and feedback. 3. Provide information on creating and improving
home pages with specific University guidelines... if they exist. 4.
Encourage the use of color pictures, graphics, etc. which add to the
professional and exciting look of Penn's web site.
001842: Suggested changes: the index.html is not very aesthetically pleasing.
in fact, it's pretty dull. perhaps it's the lack of vibrant colors-
you know, the primary colors aren't too exciting. it's just a
little too boring. it doesn't jump out at you. it's nice that the
pics change, but it's not too noticeable. people just overlook that.
the design seems a little simplistic. the font is pretty boring as
well. it just needs a little more life. not necessarily midi files
or animated gifs, but just a better layout. perhaps one that takes up
more of the screen, and not just a block on the page.
001843: Suggested changes: Need to make it simpler and need to make it more
attractive. Right now, it is not the most pleasing web to look at.
Look at Harvard or Stanford homepages- those are nice, simple,
attractive pages.
001854: Suggested changes: Better icture on the opening page... a nice shot
of locust walk could help!
001859: Suggested changes: some pages are totally useless
001863: Suggested changes: Greater emphasis on student activity - i.e. fun
and exciting pages can be as important as information- providing.
001864: Suggested changes: updated homepage listings
001870: Suggested changes: More information, or more prominently displayed
information, about content rich sites at Penn, with links thereto.
001873: Suggested changes: reorganize home page to provide more obvious
categories of info
001876: Suggested changes: different presentation of info
001880: Suggested changes: Feedback from our students and faculty suggests
that it's too many steps from Penn's home page to the College's. In
general, we have not heard many positive comments about the "pick a
view" concept. In theory it sounded great, but in practice, it seems
to take people in the wrong direction, or they get frustrated and
just hit "search".
001884: Suggested changes: Easier downloading of MedLine references directly
to refernce-manager type programs (e.g., EndNote).
001890: Suggested changes:Simplified navigation through the website.
001892: Suggested change
001896: Suggested changes: ust keep up the good work
001907: Suggested changes:better interface with lynx. I am having trouble
with Netscape from Penn--I can use the hypertext option to get into
the library (Windows 95), but I've been having trouble with PennNet.
It is frustrating to use the Web without good text interface.
001909: Suggested changes: easier to use, clarity
001914: Suggested changes:perhaps a little color. Maybe make it a little
faster.
001920: Suggested changes: clear daily calendar with good description of
events that is readily available from the homepage -- e.g. a button
that says "today's events."
001922: Suggested changes: MORE MODEMS, new homepage that doesn't look
oversimplified
001925: Suggested changes: Please see if the VR programs on the interactive
map is functioning correctly. After loading the qtvr program and
installing it and running the movie, there's no movie data to run.
001935: Suggested changes: Better access to information on research conducted
and published by Penn.
001939: Suggested changes: Change the CGS web pages to look like the rest of
the site. Currently the CGS pages don't look anything like the rest
of the site.
001943: Suggested changes: make it easier to connect remotely. i usually get a
busy signal and have to redial several times to conntect.
001950: Suggested changes: subject oriented instead of user oriented
001955: Suggested changes: Thumbnail pic's of the Penn sporting events.
Mostly just the highlights. Broadcast the Penn sporting events using
"Real Audio Server" so the parents can get the games live.
001961: Suggested changes: See the above changes. I'd like to see
improvements in the search for employees, more up-to-date
information, and an easier way to browse the information.
001962: Suggested changes: Calendar is confusing and doesn't always have
academic dates (e.g. drop end date) Info on computer services not
easy to access, primarily because different depts are responsible for
different aspects. Penn In Touch has "Important Messages" that are
left on for long periods- I want to view these messages at most once
(and usually never- they're annoying and pointless. Who cares that
Quaker Card is not affiliated with the U.? Not me, and it certainly
doesn't qualify to be an "Important Message").
001966: Suggested changes: Change the intro page from a user type page to a
subject driven page
001972: Suggested changes:Be able to print sections from Home Page rather than
single pages only. Also, improve quality of graphics in some "how to"
programs.
001974: Suggested changes: Ability to register for classes on InTouch Page
001976: Better class listing, easier access to services such as SFS, Work
Study info, and more accessable overall Penn Calendar.
001977: Suggested changes: many other colleges and universities have a virtual
tour of campus. I think Penn should include this.
001978: Suggested changes: frequent updates would be nice clear info.
presented on the web page
001979: Suggested changes:Forget the view system. Use a self-evident system
of organization, based on alpha listings and keyword indices, with
liberal cross-referencing.
001982: Suggested changes: Training should be provided for students to make
their own home pages.
001985: Suggested changes: Offices that have web pages should be held
accountable and responsible for accuracy, completeness, and
freshness of information. The resources needed to maintain websites
should be recognized and supplied by senior management.
001987: Suggested changes: I don't like the views organization.

000493: What I like best:I think Penn's Web is quite robust; that is,
it seems quite robust relative to other schools' web sites that
I have visited. I am really pleased with the amazingly extensive
library resources and databases which are available -- I use them a
lot1 I also like the fact that I can access my transcript
(unofficial as it may be) and other info on Penn's web...Assuming my
privacy is safe. Just for the heck of it, I recently checked out
other web sites among the Ivy League, and with the exception of
Cornell, none of the others seemed to offer as much as Penn's -- and
even Cornell's library resources were nowhere near being as extensive
as ours.

looks good, ie, when you pull up the first screen with the Penn logo
and a color photo, it has a great drawing capacity. You really want
to check things out. Other websites hit you with a big menu on the
first screen and I dont' think this presentation is quite as
effective. Also, like the way the pages are organized graphically.
You're not overwhelmed with information as if every square inch has to
be filled with something.
000502: What I like best: The multitude of information that is available. It
is important to understand how some of the offices operates and their
mission statements. For someone like myself, I enjoy and feel
prilveged to be able to "learn" more about the Universtiy via the Penn
Web. Therefore, as stated above it is important that the information

exams.
000885: What I like best: I like the way it looks, and it is relatively easy
to find what I am looking for, although I think admissions information
should be on every home page, as this is the number one way of
researching potential schools today.

events that are taking place on campus. I have to admitt that I don't
utilize the Penn web page as much as I should but this may be due to
my lack of knowledge of what it has to offer. Is there a way to better
disseminate what is availble on the Penn Home Page? Maybe via The
Daily Pennsylvanian or a News Letter to the Faculty and Support Staff
not to ommit the students as well.
000905: What I like best: Speed.

useful for both advising and scholarship.

I like that Penn, unlike many other schools, has a complete and
accessable student e-mail directory. There are also many helpful

of information that is easily accessable on the internet.
