Basic Adapter Configuration - Macintosh OS X version 10.x

If you are using Mac OS X, your AirPort card should readily discover the wireless networks broadcast near you. Below are instructions for ensuring that your Apple AirPort card will connect to Wireless PennNet.

  1. From the Apple Menu. Select Location, then Networking.
  2. Set "Show:" to AirPort.
  3. Set "Configure" to use DHCP Server.
  4. Select the AirPort tab and make sure wireless-pennnet appears in the SSID field. This sets the
" preferred" network when one connects via AirPort.
  5. Verify that the "show airport status in menu bar" option is selected.
  6. Select "Apply Now" to apply these settings for your AirPort card.

All other information will be served by the DHCP server. Once you've checked your AirPort configuration (and provided you have a decent wireless signal), you should be able to connect to Wireless PennNet.

Defining multiple wireless networks

If you access multiple wireless networks, you may find it useful to create locations that contain specific configuration information for each network you use.

  1. From the Apple Menu. Select Location, then System Preferences.
  2. Open the "Network" pane (icon) under "Internet & Network."
  3. Select "New Location" from the Location: drop down list.
  4. Name your location (for example "Wireless PennNet"). Configuration information for Wireless PennNet in all public spaces will be identical.
Note: Different locations may be required for access to other wireless networks on campus. Contact your Local Support Provider (view Faculty or Staff LSP list) or Information Technology Advisor (view Student ITA list) to learn how to create a discreet location for your school or center's wireless installation.
  5. Set "Show:" to AirPort.
  6. Set "Configure" to use DHCP Server.
  7. Select "Apply Now" to save this location for your AirPort card.

Switching between wireless networks

Once you've defined discreet wireless locations, you can easily switch from network to network based on your location. To change location:

  1. From the Apple Menu. Select Location.
  2. Select the location you would like to use from your list of defined locations.

You may not be authorized to use some campus wireless networks even though your wireless device discovers them. Contact your Local Support Provider (view Faculty or Staff LSP list) or Information Technology Advisor (view Student ITA list) to learn how to obtain access to other wireless networks on campus.
