DESCRIPTION:As every TA rapidly learns\, history recitations have a standar
d format: we guide students through the process of critically reading prim
ary sources and understanding the arguments of secondary sources. But this
does not always leave room for the students to experience for themselves
the wonder and confusion of encountering a source for the first time\, the
thrill of the hunt to understand its production and context\, and the sat
isfaction of building an argument based on hard-won knowledge. Professor K
athleen Brown will reflect on the challenges and pleasures of teaching stu
dents to undergo this process and to learn to think like historians. She w
ill share her experience constructing an experimental course intended to t
rain students in these fundamental skills. Jessie Regunberg\, Prof. Brownâ
€™s TA for this course\, will offer a first-hand perspective on implementi
ng these techniques in recitations.\nAll graduate students are welcome. Th
is event grows out of concerns in the History department and so may be mos
t useful to students in related fields.\nCounts toward the CTL Teaching Ce
 rtificate.
