
Sulé O. Carpenter is currently working
in Washington, DC as a Development Project Manager for the Community
Builders. Mr. Carpenter is helping launch the organization's Mid-Atlantic
Regional Office which will be responsible for the organization's
development activities in five states—North Carolina, Virginia,
Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey—and the District of
Columbia. During his first quarter of work with the organization,
he coordinated the build out of the organization's new office space,
co-authored a major grant request, and conducted research on local
development opportunities and development incentives.
Prior to being selected for a CURExPenn fellowship, Mr. Carpenter
served as the Executive Director of the Atlanta Housing Association
of Neighborhood-Based Developers (AHAND)—an association of
Atlanta's Community Development Corporations and non-profit housing
developers. In this capacity, Mr. Carpenter focused on strengthening
the organization's internal infrastructure, promoting public policies
supportive of affordable housing, and increasing the visibility
of Atlanta's affordable housing industry. During his tenure, he
increased the organization's budget by 40%, convened three Community
Economic Development Day celebrations, organized two annual conferences,
and advocated in favor of state and local legislation that was supportive
of non-profit affordable housing developers.
Mr. Carpenter earned his B.A. degree in International Studies from
Morehouse College and his Master of Science degree in Urban Policy
Analysis and Management from the New School for Social Research.
