Churchill Scholarship

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States was established in 1959 as an expression of American admiration for one of the great leaders of the free world. To facilitate sharing knowledge and ideas in sciences and technology, the Foundation adopted a scholarship program to promote exchange between the United States and Great Britain. The purpose of this program is to enable outstanding American students to do graduate work in engineering, mathematics and science at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. Churchill College, also established in 1959, enrolls approximately 600 students, two thirds of whom are students of engineering, mathematics or science. Like the other Cambridge colleges, Churchill has its own facilities, including modern residential and dining halls, a library, common rooms, and playing fields. At least ten Churchill Scholarships, tenable for one year, are offered annually. Churchill Scholars may choose to enroll in one of the following programs:

TimeframeIn early November, the Penn Churchill Committee will select no more than two nominees to be forwarded to the Churchill Foundation. Those candidates who have been nominated by Penn will be informed in January, by the Churchill Foundation, whether or not they have received the endorsement of the Screening Committee. The Board of Graduate Studies and appropriate department chairs at the University of Cambridge consider the nominees for admission. The final decision on the awards is made by the Churchill Foundation in mid-April.
