Mellon Fellowship
The granting for Mellon Fellowships has been suspended. There will NOT be a competition in 2005 for the 2006-07 academic year. see announcement.pdf for details. The Mellon Fellowships are designed to help exceptionally promising students prepare for careers in teaching and scholarship in the humanistic disciplines. The Mellon is a competitive merit award for students beginning their first year of a doctoral program. Fellows may take their award to any accredited graduate program in the United States and Canada. The fellowship covers graduate tuition and required fees for the first academic year and includes a stipend of $17,500.
Eligibility and QualificationsMellon Fellowship candidates must apply concurrently to PhD programs. The Fellowship is for one year only and cannot be deferred. Fellows are expected to carry a full course load and may not accept supplementary awards or employment, including teaching assistantships. Holders of master's degrees are not eligible, except when the degree is in a professional field or the program was terminal (no PhD offered), or the master's degree is in a substantially different field than the intended PhD.
The following fields are eligible: Art History, Classics, Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, Cultural Anthropology, Cultural Studies (including all Area Studies), English Literature, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Foreign Language and Literature, History, History and Philosophy of Mathematics, History and Philosophy of Science, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Cultural Linguistics, Music History and Theory, Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Political Theory, Religion/Religious Studies, Rhetoric, and Women's Studies. The following fields are ineligible: Archaeology, Education, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, International Studies, Law, Political Science, Psychology, Public Policy, Science and Medicine, Sociology, and Theology. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
Application Procedures and Selection CriteriaA high grade point average and high scores on the GRE are important, but the selection committee will also want to see evidence of outstanding future promise as well as any academic honors or awards that the applicant has earned. Candidates will be required to submit both a 1,000 word statement explaining their interest in their chosen field, and a 5-7 page sample of their academic writing.
TimeframeApplicants must begin the on-line application no later than November 12, 2004.
Applicants should make sure to take the GRE in time for the application deadline. The Mellon requires only the general GRE, but applicants should contact the schools to which they are applying to find out whether any subject tests are required. There is no internal Penn process for the Mellon, but potential applicants are encouraged to let CURF know when applying and seek help during the application process. Contact Cheryl Shipman
