While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homeland to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, they are expected to make presentations about their experiences abroad.

Eligibility and Qualifications

• Applicants must have completed at least two years of college-level course work or equivalent professional experience before commencing their scholarship studies.

• Relatives of Rotarians may not apply.

• Initial application must be made through a local Rotary club in proximity to the applicant's legal or permanent residence.

• In addition to the criteria listed above, applicants for Academic-Year and Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships must be proficient in the language of the proposed host country. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship applicants must have completed at least one year of college-level coursework or equivalent in the proposed language of study.

Application Procedures and Selection Criteria

To be submitted with the application form:

• Transcript

• Photograph

• Language ability form

• Brief autobiography

• Detailed statement of why the student is applying for the scholarship, what his or her proposed field of study will be, and how this relates to his or her future plans

• List summarizing principal interests and activities

• Two academic letters of recommendation

• If the language of the student's preferred country is French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish, he or she must also submit his or her own translation of all application materials

Timeframe

Each Rotary club may nominate two candidates for consideration by the Rotary district selection committee. The number of awards to which each district is entitled is determined by the amount of money contributed by that district during the preceding year. Selection by both the club and the district is based upon the application materials, plus an interview. Applicants are notified of selection soon after the district interview.
