Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars

Deadline: last Monday in January

The Whitaker Foundation allows biomedical engineers early in their careers to study, pursue an internship or do research overseas for an academic year.

Fellows are the pre-doctoral component. They must have a BS or MS in biomedical engineering (on in bioengineering if with an emphasis on biomedical engineering. < b>are the post-doctoral component. They must have a doctorate and use the award to conduct post-doctoral work. Fellows and Scholars choose and define their own overseas component which may vary from studying at a university to working at an intern at a policy-making organization. Any outstanding overseas institution that provides excellent professional experience in biomedical engineering may be chosen as a host institution. Fellows' grants will run for one academic year. Scholars' proposals may be for as little as one academic semester or as much as one academic year.

Eligibility and Qualifications

  • Must have degrees in biomedical or bioengineering, as above, received within two years of beginning the grant.
  • US citizens or permanent residents only.
  • Sufficient language abiliy to carry out the project as proposed at the time of departure.

Application Procedures and Selection Criteria

Applicants need to be nominated by their home institution. CURF will coordinate nominations with the School of Engineering.
Application consists of:
  • Application form.
  • One-page essay of motivation and personal experiences (that lead applicant to seek the grant).
  • Two-page essay of previous research experience.
  • Two-page plan or proposed study, internship and/or research.
  • One-page essay of future plans.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Language report.
  • Official transcipts.
  • Letter of invitation from host institution.

Timeframe

Those seeking nominations must inform CURF by December 15. Hard-copy applications must be sent in time to reach IIE offices January 29, 2007 as well as submitted on-line. Final decisions will be made and applicants notified by mail by April 15, 2007. Grants must begin between July 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008.
