2013 Gates Cambridge Scholar! March 15, 2013
Evelyn Boettcher (COL ’10) has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar, and will pursue a PhD in Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge. Evelyn is currently pursuing a MA in East Asia Studies as a Harvard Traveling Scholar via the David L. Boren National Security Fellowship in Inner Mongolia, where she is studying advanced Mandarin Chinese and beginner Mongolian. She has worked as a research intern for the United States Pacific Command (PACOM). At Penn Evelyn rowed for the women’s crew team, wrote for the Daily Pennsylvanian, and was a member of the Kite and Key society.
Boettcher is among 40 U.S. students awarded Gates Cambridge Scholarships this year, and is the 23rd Gates Cambridge Scholar from the University of Pennsylvania since the beginning of the program in 2001.

One Gates Cambridge Scholarship winner for 2012! February 16, 2012
Eileen Moison (WH/COL ’12) has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar this year, one of forty total. She will pursue a graduate degree in Biochemistry at Cambridge University in the UK. Afterwards she plans to continue to a PhD in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology. We are very proud of her and this great accomplishment!

BFS “Monastic Life” Seminar featured in the Houston Chronicle February 16, 2012
Professor Justin McDaniel’s course, Living Deliberately: Monk, Saints, and the Contemplative Life Seminar, has been featured in a recent article in the Houston Chronicle. This course is a great example of the incredible educational experiences you can have in a BFS Seminar.

Two 2012 Marshall Scholars from Penn November 21, 2011
CURF is very pleased to announce that Corey Metzman (WH/COL ’12) and Michael Poll (COL ’09) have been awarded Marshall Scholarships for graduate study in the UK.
Corey Metzman is a senior pursuing a dual degree in international studies and business in Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences and Wharton School through the Huntsman Program. Metzman previously received a Truman Scholarship in the spring of 2011. He has demonstrated a deep personal and scholarly commitment to public service, both locally and internationally. Metzman has traveled extensively for his studies and research while at Penn. On a recent trip to Nicaragua he assisted Penn GSE Professor Sharon Ravitch’s research team with their development research on a rural coffee farm, and is now conducting the statistical analysis as a full-fledged researcher. He is co-founder of Penn’s Dorm Room Diplomacy, a cross-campus attempt to generate mutual understanding and communication between college students in the US and the Middle East.
Metzman plans to attend the London School of Economics to pursue an MSc in Development Studies, followed by Oxford University for an MSc in Evidence-Based Social Intervention.
Michael Poll (www.michaelpollguitar.com) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the College of Arts and Sciences, and is a solo classical guitarist. A 2010 Fulbright Scholar, Michael is currently pursuing a Performance Diploma at the I.J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan, Poland, where he studies with Lukasz Kuropaczewski and Piotr Zaleski.
While a student at Penn, Michael Poll was a founding member of the Green Campus Partnership, and performed with the Penn Baroque Ensemble as well as the Penn Choir and Choral Society, and was a student of Benjamin Verdery, Frederic Hand, and Lukasz Kuropaczewski. He also pursued coursework at the Curtis Institute of Music in solfège with Eric Sessler and secondary conducting with Virginia Allen. He has given solo recitals recently in Italy, Panama, Poland, and the United States, and from 2007 until 2010 served on the faculty of the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music.

2011 Truman Scholar March 31, 2011
Corey Metzman, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded a 2011 Truman Scholarship.
Metzman, who is pursuing a dual degree in Penn’s College and Wharton School through the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, has traveled extensively for his studies and research. On a recent trip to Nicaragua, he assisted Sharon Ravitch, a faculty member in Penn’s Graduate School of Education, with research on a rural coffee farm, and he is now conducting the statistical analysis as a full-fledged researcher.
Metzman is a co-founder of Dorm Room Diplomacy, a cross-campus attempt to generate mutual understanding and communication between college students in the U.S. and the Middle East. He and co-founder Jacob Blumenfeld-Gantz will be recognized in person by former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative later this spring.
Metzman, from Nashville, Tenn., plans to pursue a joint J.D./M.P.A. degree once he completes his undergraduate studies.The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. The Foundation provides them with financial support for graduate study, leadership training and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.
Metzman was guided in applying for the Truman Scholarship by Penn’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, headed by Harriet Joseph.
