2011 Truman Scholar March 31, 2011
Corey Metzman, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded a 2011 Truman Scholarship.
Metzman, who is pursuing a dual degree in Penn’s College and Wharton School through the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, has traveled extensively for his studies and research. On a recent trip to Nicaragua, he assisted Sharon Ravitch, a faculty member in Penn’s Graduate School of Education, with research on a rural coffee farm, and he is now conducting the statistical analysis as a full-fledged researcher.
Metzman is a co-founder of Dorm Room Diplomacy, a cross-campus attempt to generate mutual understanding and communication between college students in the U.S. and the Middle East. He and co-founder Jacob Blumenfeld-Gantz will be recognized in person by former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative later this spring.
Metzman, from Nashville, Tenn., plans to pursue a joint J.D./M.P.A. degree once he completes his undergraduate studies.
The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. The Foundation provides them with financial support for graduate study, leadership training and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.
Metzman was guided in applying for the Truman Scholarship by Penn’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, headed by Harriet Joseph.
