Rose Award

The Rose Foundation has generously provided a gift, known as the Rose Undergraduate Research Award Fund, whose income recognizes outstanding achievement in research by undergraduates and by the faculty who advise them. The Rose Fund is administered by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowship, with awards made annually on a competitive basis.

Outstanding research achievements by undergraduates may be recognized by an award from the Rose Undergraduate Awards Fund. All research projects are eligible and need not have been funded by undergraduate research grants in order to qualify for recognition. Depending upon the income available, up to five awards of up to $1000 each will be made each year. In cases where there are multiple student research investigators, the awards will be divided among the participants. The criteria used in judging the projects will be the quality, the originality, and the importance of the research. All applicants must be members in good standing of the University of Pennsylvania community.

Research projects submitted for recognition must have a faculty advisor. Projects may be in any discipline or may represent an interdisciplinary effort.

Procedure for Application

To be considered for the Rose Award, students should submit the application form below along with a letter of nomination from a member of the faculty. The deadline for nominations is April 4. While either students or faculty may initiate the application, both parts must be included.

Faculty Letter of Nomination

The faculty letter of nomination should address four criteria: the significance of the work within the discipline, its originality or creativity, the independence of the research (particularly if it is part of an on-going or larger research effort), and the ability of the paper to analyze and synthesize research findings. It should not exceed three (3) pages. There is no form for this letter.

Student Application

The letter of nomination should be accompanied by the student's description of the project. The application should contain the following information:

  1. Application Form available here or in hardcopy from CURF
  2. Long Abstract (not to exceed three pages excluding figures or tables of data)
    • Description of Project--overview of project including a justification in terms intelligible to an educated non-specialist.
    • Methodology
    • Findings
    • Conclusions and Implications
    • List grants received to support this project
One original and three copies of this material should be submitted, along with two copies of the student's completed research paper and any other materials or supporting documentation such as appendices, photographs, cassettes, computer diskettes, other letters of support, etc.

Deadlines and Timeframes

Completed applications and letters from advisors must be submitted by April 4. Applications with late material risk being not considered. Proposals will be reviewed by a faculty committee designated by CURF. All applicants will be notified promptly of selection results. Awards will be announced before Commencement and publicized in the appropriate campus media.
