UScholars Research Funding

We strongly encourage you to discuss your project ideas with Harriet Joseph, Associate Director, University Scholars, before submitting a proposal. To make an appointment with Dr. Joseph, please call 215-746-6488

Application and Selection Procedures

A funding application consists of:
  1. Cover sheet with student's name, address, year and school, sponsor's name, brief description and previous funding. The cover sheet can be downloaded and should be emailed to Dr. Joseph together with the proposal and budget.
  2. Proposal and budget.
Proposals and budget can be one document and should come by email to Dr. Joseph, to speed transmission. Please see "Guidelines for Proposals".
  3. Faculty sponsor's letter.
Students should have a faculty sponsor for their project and request that person send a letter of support
electronically to Dr. Joseph at hjoseph@pobox.upenn.edu

A majority of funding committee members available will need to agree to a proposal in order for it to be approved. This means four of five members, or three of four members if the fifth is unavailable.

Funding checks are requested using Student Financial Services (SFS). An outstanding negative SFS balance could interrupt the process. A student with such a balance should discuss this with Dr. Joseph.

Applicants must be members in good standing of the University of Pennsylvania community

Deadlines and Time Frames

Summer funding proposals, budgets and supporting letters will be due by April 1st. Once complete, the proposal will go to the funding committee. The committee will review the proposal and ask for revisions as needed.

Project Conclusions

At the end of the funding period the student will give a presentation to the University Scholars at a weekly lunch or tea. Tina Gravatt will coordinate the scheduling of these presentations.
