Humanities Internships

Atwater Kent Museum

AKMP, Philadelphia’s official city history museum, offers two summer internships that involve the intern in two important initiatives. The collection related project includes preparing artifacts for evaluation, tracking items that have been selected for deaccession, providing assistance in all elements of the deaccession process, participating in data clean-up, and other tasks related to collection management. The exhibition research portion of the internship focuses on assisting the museum’s historian in research for the new interactive exhibits scheduled to open in March 2010. Each project draws on different skill sets.

Required Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of American history; ideally familiarity with Philadelphia history
  • Attention to detail and flexibility
  • Historical research skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work on a team and take direction

Schedule:

The internship starts any time after mid-May 2009 and runs through mid-August 2009. Interns work their hours at the museum on a Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. schedule.

Supervision:

Interns report to Cynthia Little, Ph.D., Historian.

Location:

The museum is located near Independence Mall at 15 South 7th street.
