Institute of Contemporary Art Summer 2014 Internship
The Institute of Contemporary Art offers two summer internships in the curatorial department for students would like to gain experience in exhibition research, publications, archives, public programs, and interpretation. ICA summer interns will assist the Senior Curator, Director of Curatorial Affairs, Programming Curator, Associate Curator, and Assistant Curator with a substantial project as well as ongoing administrative and research tasks. Past projects have included development of an online audio slide show with artist Brian Tolle, preparation of an illustrated exhibition chronology for a major monographic publication on artist Barry Le Va, production assistance for a documentary about artist Zoe Strauss, and research for a group exhibition “The Puppet Show.” Because ICA is a small organization, interns have the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of an art museum from the intricacies associated with procuring loans, the installation process, conducting research, developing interpretative podcasts, coordinating group tours, assisting with grant proposals, assisting in coordinating public programs, sorting archival materials, preparing press releases, and building and maintaining ICA’s digital archive. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary culture to participate in an exciting, fast-paced environment while learning about art and museums
This position affords potential candidates the opportunity to get hands-on experience working closely with curators at ICA conducting research related to upcoming exhibitions as well as ongoing administrative tasks. The primary project this summer will be assisting with research and organization for the fall exhibition “Jason Rhoades, Four Roads,” organized by Senior Curator Ingrid Schaffner. In this role explorations of the artist’s background and essays on his past work will be collected and evaluated forming the simulacra of the final essays and other didactic material relating to the exhibition. The curatorial intern will also assist with research and organization for the upcoming 50th anniversary exhibition “ICA@50,” a major institution-wide project exploring the history of ICA in the context of the present. Secondary work will involve filing, data entry, library organization, digital archive organization, and general research for the Department.
Public Programs Intern
This position presents potential candidates with a unique opportunity to create a lasting mark on the legacy of ICA at the intersection of programming and curatorial practice. The primary goal of the internship will be to assist in the research and implementation of a programming strategy for ICA’s fall exhibition “Jason Rhoades, Four Roads” and to work on the documentation materials that will play a major role in the launch of ICA’s new website. The intern will also work with the Program Curator and Spiegel Fellow to develop events for our groundbreaking celebration of ICA’s 50th anniversary. In addition to the ongoing media archive project, the intern will be expected to perform daily administrative tasks as well as assist with all aspects of public programs. Intern must be available beginning in June or July including Wednesday evenings.
