Institute of Contemporary Art
The Institute of Contemporary Art offers two summer internships in the curatorial department for students who would like to gain experience in exhibition research, publications, archives, public programs and interpretation. ICA summer interns will assist the Senior Curator, Curator of Education, Associate Curator, Assistant Curator and/or Exhibitions Coordinator with a substantial project as well as ongoing administrative tasks. Past projects have included development of an online audio slide show with artist Brian Tolle, preparation of an illustrated exhibition chronology for a major monographic publication on artist Barry Le Va, production assistance for a documentary about artist Zoe Strauss, and research for a group exhibition “The Puppet Show.”
Because ICA is a small organization, interns have the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of an art museum from the intricacies associated with procuring loans, the installation process, developing interpretative podcasts, coordinating group tours, assisting with grant proposals, mentoring high school interns, coordinating public programs, sorting archival materials, preparing press releases, maintaining ICA’s library, and writing educational materials. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary culture to participate in an exciting, fast-paced environment while learning about art and museums.
Education / Media Intern
This position presents potential candidates with a unique opportunity to create a lasting mark on the legacy of ICA. The primary goal of the CURF intern a will be to assist in the conceptualization and execution of ICA’s online media center. The goal is to significantly develop ICA’s website and our YouTube channel. Past experience with video and audio editing is preferred but not mandatory. In addition to the ongoing media project, the intern will also be expected to perform daily administrative tasks as well as assist with all aspects of public programs. Intern must be available the entire month of July including Wednesday evenings.
Curatorial Intern
This position affords potential candidates the opportunity in the Curatorial Department will assist the Senior Curator, Curator of Education, Associate Curator, Assistant Curator and/or Exhibitions Coordinator with a substantial project as well as ongoing administrative tasks. The primary project this summer will be assisting with the research and organization of the National travelling exhibition “Maira Kalman.” In this role explorations of the artist’s background and essays on her past work will be collected and evaluated, installation handbooks will be organized and created, and loans will be administered. Secondary work will involve filing, data entry, library organization and general research for the Department.
