Funded Research Programs

There are many, many structured research-oriented programs available for undergraduates during the summers. They vary in their details but in general admit a small number of students who combine seminar-style learning with carrying out an independent project. Program staff and faculty help the students develop their project; projects do not need to be defined in advance. Most programs introduce students to the top specialists in the field, to the range of current research topics available, and to the specific projects of that institution. These programs are extremely valuable for a student considering a future in academic or policy research and seeking a hands-on opportunity.

CURF and the College of Arts and Sciences sponsor competitive summer internships in humanities and arts-based organizations on Penn's campus and in Philadelphia. Information is available on community service and other sorts of internships.

  • National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) sites are scattered around the country and cover a range of science disciplines. Each site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates from throughout the country, who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is assigned to a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. In addition, seminars, lunch meetings, and social functions are organized to facilitate interaction between the undergraduates. Students are granted stipends, and in some cases assistance with housing and travel. REU sites include the Social, Behavorial and Economic Sciences.

  • The National Institutes for Health
    • Research Supplements -- Faculty with NIH grants use these funds to hire undergraduate researchers. The site allows students to search for faculty by discipline, as well as providing the information needed for faculty with NIH grants to sign up. For students who are underrespresented minorities only.

    • Undergraduate Scholarship Program -- "competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research." This is a one-year, renewable scholarship (up to four years) which covers costs of undergraduate tuition as well as providing placement in a summer lab program and one year of post-graduate work.

  • DOE Office of Science Education
Energy Research Undergraduate Laboratory Fellowships places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing a Lab).

  • The Leonard Davis Institute Summer Undergraduate Minority Research Institute is for rising undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors from underrepresented minority groups, or anyone interested in exploring the field of health services research . The SUMR program provides students with an opportunity to receive a stipend to conduct health services research on a topic of their choice, under the guidance of Penn faculty.

  • Penn Undergraduate Environmental Health Scholars Program
The Penn Undergraduate Environmental Health Scholars Program is a collaboration between CEET, the Center for Public Health Initiatives, and multiple schools and faculty at Penn. Ten weeks of summer activities will expose students to the field of environmental health science through mentorship, coursework, and field experience. Each summer, six internships will be awarded to Penn undergraduate students who will work one-on-one with mentors on projects that they choose and design. Each intern will receive $3,500 for the 10 week internship. Highlights of the program are cutting-edge research seminars on environmental health topics, laboratory or field projects mentored by Penn faculty, and weekly field trips to environmental sites or government agencies.
The deadline for applications is April 1st, 2008.
