Welcome to the BFS Students Page. This is the place to be if you want to find out about Benjamin Franklin Seminars, advising, research opportunities and BFS news and events. Benjamin Franklin SeminarsBenjamin Franklin Seminars are small courses that explore subjects in depth through discussions of primary literature. As a Benjamin Franklin Scholar, you are required to take one BF seminar (not including BENF 099) for a grade (i.e. not pass/fail) each year, although you are welcome to take as many as you like. Completion of at least 7 BF seminars with a 3.0 average, together with a senior capstone project, will earn you a BFS Certificate at graduation (see details). Most BF seminars will fulfill general requirements, see the current course offerings for details.

Students who are eligible to receive the certificate must return the form below by the last Tuesday in January. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST FORM AdvisingScholars must meet in person with their BFS advisor at least once per semester during their first two semesters in the program. This requirement applies even to students who have been assigned a school or departmental advisor. If your last name begins with A-G, your advisor is Gwynne Lynch.
ResearchMany Benjamin Franklin Scholars decide to pursue a subject through independent study or research. You can get academic credit for your research by registering for BENF 099. Please note that BENF 099 does not count as a BFS Seminar. Click HERE for information and an application form for BENF 099. Many professors are looking for undergraduates to work with them on their research, either as a volunteer or work-study position. CURF's Research Directory lists opportunities with Penn professors in every subject area. Click HERE to go to the Research Directory. If your project requires you to be at Penn over the summer, you may apply for BFS Summer Funding. Click HERE for information on Summer Funding.
