Penn Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty

Greetings to you all, from PASEF.

It has been a busy Fall at the Penn Association of Senior & Emeritus Faculty, and I'm taking this opportunity to review a few things and point ahead to the new year. The highlight of the Fall was the joint reception with ASEF to celebrate and honor our 28 colleagues who have retired in the last academic year. Each was greeted with a brief review of their careers at Penn, and our new Vice Provost for the Faculty, Anita Allen, also thanked them. The reception at the Sweeten Alumni Center provided lots of time for mixing and enjoying extended food and drinks. If you missed it, check the honorees' bios on our PASEF website and please be sure to come to next Fall's party.

We have continued to joint-sponsor with ASEF monthly luncheon lectures at the University Club, listed in advance on our website: www.upenn.edu/emeritus. The site also has useful reminders about upcoming events, plus essays by colleagues, the "Hitch-hikers' Guide to Retirement" which is full of useful info for those contemplating retirement, and other interesting items.

In the new year, we look forward toward our Road to Retirement sessions. The first will feature Vicki Mulhern executive director for faculty affairs in the med school and Hilary Lopez from the university's Human Resources office, who will review the pros and cons of retirement as well as the steps involved in exercising the various options. This will be held February 18th in the medical school area. A panel of emeriti will follow in March with a discussion of their experience after moving to emeritus status.

Other activities - all noted on our website (expertly managed by Alan Myers!) - include courses offered by the library for use of the internet and the library's extensive electronic options for our use (facilitated by Vivian Seltzer), essays by faculty colleagues describing their experiences of serving as hosts on Alumni Association-sponsored trips and how you might host, continued monthly luncheon lectures, a projected Spring Outing, and our annual Special Spring Lecture.

Finally, I cannot resist the opportunity as an Infectious Diseases specialist to urge you to be sure that you are up to date with your adult immunizations:

My best wishes for a lovely and fruitful holiday season. Please consult the website frequently, and participate in PASEF events. If you'd like to consider serving on the board, talk with any board member for details.
