Members of PASEF are cordially invited to march in the Academic Procession at the University of Pennsylvania's 252st Commencement on Monday, May 19, 2008. We encourage you to join us for this special moment in University history.
Please register for the Academic Procession no later than Friday, April 25th at the following web page:
You may also request special reserved section tickets for your guests on the same website. The tickets that you request will be mailed to you at the beginning of May. Reserved seating is available for faculty and special guests only; all other seating is unreserved and requires no tickets. If you have trouble accessing this web page, please call (215)-898-7369.
The procession will form promptly at 8:45 a.m. in the lobby of the Annenberg Center and proceed through the campus to Franklin Field. The procession will pause for about 45 minutes on Locust Walk in front of the Van Pelt Library and line the pathway while the student procession passes through. The members of the Academic Procession are encouraged to applaud the students as they proceed down Locust Walk, but we ask that you not reach out to shake hands with the students, as this slows down the procession. The Commencement ceremony will begin at approximately 10:15 a.m., with the entrance of the Academic Procession, and will conclude at approximately noon with the recession from Franklin Field.
Commencement will be held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, the Academic Procession will form at 9:45 a.m. in the Weightman Hall Gymnasium, 33rd Street just north of South Street. Those joining the procession should feel free to carry umbrellas to protect themselves and their academic attire from the rain. If there are any changes in the ceremony plans, details will be communicated by: (1) signs at the Annenberg Center; (2) announcements on Penn's Commencement Hotline, (215)-573-GRAD, on the University’s emergency information number, (215)-898-MELT, and on radio station KYW (1060 AM); and (3) a notice on the Commencement website: http://www.upenn.edu/commencement/
You also are invited to attend one of the Baccalaureate Ceremonies which will take place in Irvine Auditorium on Sunday afternoon, May 18. The Baccalaureate Ceremony is a 50-minute interfaith program that includes music, readings, prayers, and a guest speaker. In order to accommodate all those who wish to attend, there will be two consecutive ceremonies at 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. Tickets and academic regalia are not required.
If you plan to march in the Academic Procession, please retain this email for future reference. I hope you will join us in the pageantry and tradition as we honor this year's graduating classes.
Leslie Laird Kruhly, Secretary of the University
