Professor Edward Peters, Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at Penn will present the topic:

Torture and its Modern Disguises

This talk will consider very briefly what torture was and how it disappeared throughout Europe around 1800---and why that disappearance was problematic. It will then deal more fully with the circumstances of torture's reappearance and its contemporary uses and disguises in the first decade of the twenty-first century, what George Orwell might call "Torture and the English Language".
