Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Management and Technology Summer Institute?

M&TSI is a for-credit summer program for rising high school seniors who want to learn about the integration of technological concepts and management principles. M&TSI provides an insight into an engineering undergraduate education and a business undergraduate education.

How do I apply?

Applications are accepted online at the following site: M&TSI 2008 Application. The online application for our 2008 program will be available the first week of January 2008. Supporting materials like transcripts, teacher recommendations, and copies of PSAT scores should be mailed to: Management & Technology Summer Institute c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs 610 S. Henderson Road King of Prussia, PA 19406

Can international students apply?

Absolutely! Each year M&TSI brings a diverse group of students from around the globe to campus. If accepted to M&TSI, international students will obtain either an I-20 or DS-2019 visa with the help of the M&T Program and Penn's Office of International Programs. Accepted students will individually receive more details on this process.

How do I send my test scores?

Please send a copy of the College Board score reports for all standardized tests you have taken with your other supplemental materials.

I have not taken the PSATs or SATs. Can I still apply?

Yes, although we encourage students to submit standardized test scores, students may still apply without them.

What does ‘for-credit’ mean?

M&TSI students who successfully complete the program will earn one Penn credit unit (equivalent to one college course). Typically, this credit has been used at Penn and other institutions as a technical elective or general elective, respectably. If you have questions about how this credit will transfer to a specific college or university, please contact the Registrar’s Office of that institution.

Is there a standard form for teacher recommendations?

There is no specific form for the two required teacher recommendations. We want to hear from the recommender about their knowledge of the student’s abilities and why they believe the student would be a good candidate for the M&TSI program. Teachers may write their recommendation on school letterhead or the teacher’s official letterhead. All recommendations can be sent to: Management and Technology Summer Institute c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs 610 S. Henderson Road King of Prussia, PA 19406

What is Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs?

Julian Krinsky Camps and Programs (JKCP) is the service provider for M&TSI. They assist with the administrative oversight of the program, process applications, and also plan the non-academic focus of the program. JKCP does not participate in the admissions decisions for M&TSI – those decisions are all made internally by the Program. All content for M&TSI is provided by the M&T Program including faculty members and guest speakers.

Who do I send my application materials to?

Please send all supporting materials (transcripts, copies of official test scores, teacher recommendations) to: Management and Technology Summer Institute c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs 610 S. Henderson Road King of Prussia, PA 19406

Who do I contact if I have a billing question?

All billing questions should be directed to Michele Welgoss at JKCP. Michele can be reached either by phone at 610-265-9401 or by email at Michele@jkcp.com

Who do I contact if I have a question about my application materials?

All application and admissions questions should be directed to M&T office by phone (215-898-4145) or email (mgtech@seas.upenn.edu).

Why is my social security number required for application? (For Domestic US applicants only)

Social security numbers are required for two reasons. First, because M&TSI is an actual course, students will be officially enrolled as a student at Penn for the summer. To officially enroll a student, we must start an official student record. The second reason why social security numbers are needed is because of a field trip during the program. Each summer, the students visit the New York Stock Exchange and the strict security measures of the Exchange require that all visitors submit social security numbers prior to entrance.

What is the total cost of the summer program? Will I need any extra spending money?

M&TSI costs $5400.00 per student. This fee covers room, meals, lab fees, course materials, field trips, and weekend activities. The amount of additional money needed during the program is at the discretion of the student. We usually suggest approximately $75-$125 per week for incidentals like laundry, snacks, off campus meals, and personal expenses.

What will we be doing during the three weeks of the program? Are there any sample schedules I can see?

Completing a college course in three weeks is no simple task so most of the days are spent in class. Classes are taught in either a seminar format or lecture style. Students will also be conducting lab work throughout the program. To further showcase the connections between management and technology, the Program takes several field trips to regional companies that emphasis this intersection. A final project is the culminating piece of M&TSI. For greater detail of past summer’s schedules, visit this link: M&TSI Schedule

Do I need to wait until I have all of my application materials ready before I can apply online?

No, students can start their online application process immediately and send in the supporting materials as they are ready.

Who are the instructors for the summer program?

The central instructors for M&TSI are Penn professors Jeffrey Babin and Sid Deliwala. Other faculty members from both the Wharton School and Penn Engineering will also participate in the Program. Students will hear from the Dean of Penn Engineering and the Vice Dean of the Wharton School as well as the Director of the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology. Penn Alumni and M&T Alumni are also guest speakers throughout the Program.

Where do M&TSI students live and eat during their three-week stay?

Students live in Penn dormitories during their stay; more specifically, they stay in the Quad. Students are separated by gender on each floor. Residential Teaching Assistants (RTAs – who are current students in the M&T Program) live on the floor with the students. The RTAs hold two roles during the summer, serving as both a teaching assistant and a residential advisor.

How will participating in M&TSI effect my admissions to Penn?

There is no relationship between the M&TSI Program and the Undergraduate Admissions process.
