Cosby to Grads: "Work Your Opportunity!"
"They've got you fooled," Dr. William H. Cosby, Hon'90, (better known as Bill) informed some 5,000 Penn students sweltering in nylon graduation gowns. "You think it's something special to sit in the sun and pass out. Four years of a higher education, you're sitting in the sun to pass out!"
For its 241st Commencement last month at Franklin Field, Penn was treated to some vintage humor from the Philadelphia native, entertainer, educator, and philanthropist. (And no one passed out, at least during the ceremonies.) Continued ...


Hackney: Back to History from the Humanities
Dr. Sheldon Hackney, Hon'93, the University's former president, has spent the last four years defending the National Endowment for the Humanities from the federal budget-cutting axe. French Universities: Tourist Class All the Way
With a new corps of graduating seniors being turned loose upon the world, and the University thinking in increasingly international terms, it seemed a good time to ponder the status of higher education in other parts of the globe. After reading a brief item in the English department's newsletter by Dr. Jean-Michel Rabate, professor of English, we called him up and asked if he'd be willing to talk about the year he spent recently teaching at the University of Dijon and the American University in Paris. The Catch of the Day, Fresh from the Tank
"The future lies in these artificial tanks," says Dr. Leon Weiss, the Lambert Professor of Cell Biology at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Weiss is referring to plastic tanks designed for growing fish, and as director of a feasibility study to be undertaken at the vet school, he and his colleagues will have an opportunity to see whether that future can get started now.
