I first realized that something was up with the music department at Penn in the fall of 2001, when one of my writing students started lugging a cello to class in the upstairs seminar room at Kelly Writers House. The enormous fiberglass case, its white shell gleaming like a space capsule, took up a whole corner of the room and caused a ruffle of curiosity among our fiction workshop. “Is that a guitar?” someone wanted to know. “Are you going to play for us?” Drew Armstrong C’03 shook his head and smiled mysteriously. “My piano trio rehearses after class. We have a coaching with the Cassatt Quartet, part of their residency.” Piano trio? Residency? Was this the University of Pennsylvania? page > > > > > |
