The Summer Palace

That’s the title of a new 25-feet tall artwork on view at the Morris Arboretum’s Madeleine K. Butcher Sculpture Garden, made entirely out of locally gathered twigs and saplings—mostly willow, dogwood, maple, and birch. The piece was conceived by artist Patrick Dougherty, and constructed by him and more than 75 Arboretum staff and volunteers during a three-week residency this spring. It will remain in place for as long as it lasts naturally—probably about two years.
