The Hon. Edward R. Becker, C'54, became chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit on February 1. Avrom I. Doft, W'60, writes that he is thrilled with the birth of his first grandchild, Eliana Sophie Doft; her proud parents are Jacob W. Doft, W'91, and Suzanne Weiss Doft, C'92, and her other proud grandfather is William Weiss, W'65. He had commented that in his writing classes he previously had dismissed the short story as 'finger exercises' for the novel, but had come to appreciate the difficulty and the poerty-like beauty that is possible in the form. "I've sort of converted myself to the form over the years as I've written more and more. It requires such high standards -- it's like a poem because no words can be out of place." Henry R. Silverman, L'64, New York City, president and CEO of Cendant Corporation, received the American Heritage Award from the Anti-Defamation League at a fundraising dinner in June. From his work in the civil-rights movement in the 1960s, to his involvement with Russian refusniks during the 1970s, and more recently, through his company's sponsorship of the Inner-City Games, he had embodied "the ADL's highest ideals and aspirations." Fern Levantine Wayne, CW'64, Penn Valley, Pa., has embaked on a new career: she has designed and now is producing a line of fine, hand-crafted knitwear for "the sophisticated woman who doesn't feel compelled to dress like everyone else," under the label Fern Wayne Designs. Her line, which makes extensive use of plush chenille yarns and antique buttons, will be featured in over 35 craft galleries, museum shops, and boutiques throughout the country this fall. Some of her works have appeared in the Philadelphia Museum of Art's 1997 Art and Craft Show, and the American Craft Council shows in Baltimore, Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte, N.C., and she was invited to participate in its inaugural Chicago show in May. Her husband, Norman Wayne, WG'68, is actively involved in the day-to-day operations of this rapidly growing startup venture; they can be reached by e-mail at waynefn@compuserve.com .
