It was great to get together with Russ Sherman MtE50 and Dick Denison ME50. It was the first in some years, but the next one wont be too long in coming. Dr. Lionel Wyld G50 Gr59 is a former department head of the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I., and a director of the Navy League of the United States, Newport Council. Last spring he graduated, with a certificate, from Cumberland Countys citizen police academy. 52 Rev. Chase S. Hunt C52 retired in June as director of planned giving at the Princeton Theological Seminary. 53 Arthur R. G. Solmssen L53 writes that his 1975 book, The Comfort Letter, has been reissued in paperback (Scott & Perry). This gripping novel about a Philadelphia lawyers troubles with his biggest corporate client, and the accountants, has been recommended reading for law students. It explains the stories behind the headlines; whenever a big business deal closes, the outside accountants must give written comfort, by assuring everybody that nothing very bad has happened since the financial statements were published. 55 Michael Winokur Ar55 writes, I have retired to New Mexico. My biggest project now is following the career of daughter Marissa Jaret Winokur, who won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical (Hairspray). She is now in production, both starring and executive producer, of an ABC family movie entitled Beautiful Girl, with Fran Dresher, and she will soon be going into production of Once Upon a Mattress, starring Carol Burnett, for ABC Movie of the Week. 56 R. YEAR 2004 67 Bruce Finsilver W67 announces that his second one-man show of oil paintings, The Body Electric, will be on view at the Del Gallery in Lathrup Village, Mich., in November. His paintings can also be seen on his Web site (www.finsilver.net/art_gallery). Howard S. Freedlander C67 <freedfriends@goeaston.net> in late May was named deputy treasurer for external affairs for the state of Maryland. After serving more than 21 years with the Military Department of Maryland, including stints as executive officer and director of public affairs and legislative liaison, I now am in a position that entails staff oversight of all large expenditures for commodities and services used by state agencies. The procurement and contract world, while new and still mystifying to me after nearly four months, nonetheless is fascinating and challenging. I am fortunate to work for a person widely respected in the state capital for her reasoned, intelligent and low-key approach to sometimes complicated, politically charged issues. I feel buoyed by the realization that, at the ripe old age of 57, I could change careers and succeed so far in opening my mind to hitherto unfamiliar areas of government. I love public service and look forward to working several more years in Annapolis. Edward B. Weinberg W67 <eweinberg@lcgandm.com>, who practices law in Louisville, Ky., recently was elected chair of The Home of the Innocents, a medical and residence facility sheltering and caring for abandoned, abused, neglected, and medically fragile children. For the past six years he has served as chair of management in Baruchs Zicklin School of Business. He notes, The Department is the largest, and most diverse, academic department of management in the country, with 40 full-time faculty, and 25 part-time appointments each semester; it includes divisions of organizational behavior, operations management, strategic management, and entrepreneurship. He wrote Working With Wood: the Basics of Craftsmanship. Joel Grossman C72 <jgrossman@adrservices.org> e-mails, After 25 years of litigating matters, both as inside and outside counsel, I am hanging up my suit of armor and becoming a mediator. I will be focusing on entertainment and employment-related disputes. I will be associating with the mediation firm ADR Services, Inc., in Los Angeles, and would love to help fellow alumni resolve disputes without the cost and risk of trial. Dr. Hilary D. He has now settled in the Naples, Fla., area, and is planning to semi-retire there with his family. He recently joined the faculty of Edison Community College at its Collier County campus, teaching standard Mandarin Chinese and English as Second Language. Although some people may think Chinese and the East Asian languages are difficult to learn, he said the learning experience varies with individuals, and with the language: For native English speakers, Mandarin Chinese is relatively easy to acquire, compared to Japanese. Southern dialects of Chinese are easier and Cantonese is somewhat more difficult than Mandarin. I have loved the diversity of my nursing career, which has taken me into every sector, public and private, governmental, academic, and now corporate. I look forward to working many years more: there are so many challenges in healthcare, and nursing is emerging as key to improving the system of care in the U.S. I would love to get an update on the whereabouts of my other 12 classmates; please let me know where you are and what your are doing <Nancy.Valentine@cigna.com>. In 1999 the Academy of American Poets awarded him their Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Fellowship for his work on Cesare Paveses poetry. The resulting volume was Disaffections, which the judges say is an exemplary volume for attending to various qualities integral to Paveses poetry. As a poet-translator, Brock has brought Paveses poems to English without a loss of defining rhythm and meaning, and with an attention that indicates the translators profound understanding of another writers poetics.
