The University of Pennsylvania welcomes application from McNair Scholars interested in its summer programs and graduate programs. McNair Scholars may request a waiver of the application fee by providing documentation of financial need (such as a letter from their McNair Program Director).
All McNair Scholars who are admitted to Ph.D. programs are eligible to be considered for full funding (which confers full tuition, a maintenance stipend, and health insurance coverage).
Each year two McNair Graduate Scholarships will be offered to McNair Scholars who have been accepted with full support into Penn Ph.D. programs. The Provost's Office will provide a supplement of $1,000 (for the first year) to two McNair Fellows. The funds may be used for books, research, professional travel, or any other purpose that supports the students' education. Awards will be announced by mid April. Separate application for the McNair Graduate Scholarship is not necessary, but in order to guarantee consideration, eligible accepted students are advised to contact Karen Lawrence, Assistant Vice-Provost for Graduate Education, by March 30.
McNair Scholars who enroll in Penn’s Ph.D. programs are inducted into the University’s Fontaine Society, an honor society founded in memory of Dr. William Fontaine, the first member of the faculty who was African American. Today the Fontaine Society includes 130 current student members from across all of the graduate programs at Penn, who epitomize Penn’s commitment to excellence and to diversity.
The University of Pennsylvania has a McNair Scholar program. McNair Scholars from other campuses are encouraged to contact Dr. Janet Thomas, Director of the McNair Scholars Program, for information about arranging a campus visit.
