Opportunities for Interdisciplinary Study
Expansion of opportunities for interaction and integration of learning across disciplines is at the heart of the Penn Compact. Many of the University's nearly sixty graduate groups are, by design, interdisciplinary; they include faculty from multiple departments and schools. In addition, Penn offers dual degree programs (in which students pursue two separate degrees, such as the M.D.-Ph.D.), joint degree programs (in which students pursue a single degree with specializations in two areas, such as a Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography) and cross-disciplinary certificate programs (such as in Women's Studies). The University's nearly 100 research centers and institutes bring together scholars and students from across departmental and school boundaries.
With the Penn Compact, the University rededicates itself to providing graduate students with the widest range of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Students within interdisciplinary programs as well as students who wish to take selected classes in other departments are encouraged to learn more about such opportunities by following the links below. Guidelines regarding each school's policies on cross-school registration are provided. Students should obtain permission from their program chair and/or school registrar when planning to enroll for courses outside of their home school.
