Shelby Boardman, Charles L. Denison Professor of Geology at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, received his B.A. from Miami University in 1966, and his M.S. (economic geology, 1969) and Ph.D. (petrology, 1971) from The University of Michigan.

Dr. Boardman began teaching at Carleton in 1971. His teaching interests include mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, x-ray analysis of rocks and minerals, mineral and energy resources, the geochemistry of igneous rocks, Precambrian geology, and introductory geology.

For most of his professional career, Dr. Boardman has focused his research interests on the Precambrian geology of central Colorado. During that time, he has included more than three dozen students in field work, either as collaborators on joint research projects or as field assistants. He has received funding from numerous sources, including the National Science Foundation, the Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, the Pew Mid-States Consortium, and Carleton College. He has edited one published book and authored or co-authored more than 25 articles and abstracts. Currently he is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Association of Geology Teachers, the Society of Sigma Xi, and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.

Dr. Boardman was appointed to a four-year term as Associate Dean of Carleton College in September of 1994. He assumed the position of Acting Dean of Carleton College while Dean Elizabeth McKinsey is on sabbatical. The term for this appointment will be January through August of this year.
