A graduate of Harvard College, Peter Stanley earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. Dr. Stanley has been President of Pomona College since 1991, joining the College after eight years at the Ford Foundation, first as Program Officer in charge of the Education and Culture Program and then as Director of the Education and Culture Program. Prior to his work at the Ford Foundation, Dr. Stanley was Dean of the College at Carleton College.

He began his career teaching American and Asian history at Harvard and the University of Illinois, and is the author of three books and a number of scholarly and popular articles. Dr. Stanley has recently completed service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The College Board, where he now serves as Chair of the Nominations Committee. He also currently serves as a director of the Hitachi Foundation, the Irvine Foundation, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, and the National Foreign Language Center, and is a member of the Board of Fellows of the Claremont University Center.
