Douglas Van Houweling

Van Houweling came to Michigan from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he was Vice Provost for Computing and Planning from 1981 until 1984. In this capacity, he initiated and directed Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew project to enable broad use of personal computer workstations in a networked environment.

Before joining Carnegie-Mellon, Van Houweling was at Cornell University from 1970 to 1981 as Assistant Professor of Government. In 1976, he took on the additional responsibility of Assistant Director for User Services in Cornell Computer Services. In 1978, he was named Director of Academic Computing and in 1980 became Director of Academic Computing and Central Computing Services.

Dr. Van Houweling received his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. in Government from Indiana University. He has consulted with numerous organizations and businesses and has written many articles on information technology, as well as on urban policies and the modeling of political processes.
