Move-out time at Penn usually means tons of used furniture and household goods thrown in the trash all over campus and the nearby neighborhoods – a lot of it still in usable condition. Wouldn't it be better for Philadelphia and for the planet if all this useful stuff could make its way to people who could really use it, rather than getting shoveled immediately into landfills?

What is PennMOVES?

The goal of PennMOVES is to help Penn students get rid of the stuff they don't want to haul home, and do it in a way that is socially responsible and environmentally aware. We'll be collecting your cast-offs— clothes, furniture, kitchen gear, non-perishable food items, and the like— and distributing them to organizations who help West Philadelphians and other nearby communities in need.

For 2008, we have selected several primary organizations to which we will donate the items we receive: AchieveAbility, Uhuru, and the PennVIPS Scholarships Program. You can find out more about these organizations here.

Items not donated to these primary organizations will be donated to other community organizations and persons in need.

How can I help?

By donating your used-but-usable items! Our guide to donating will be available soon.

There will also be volunteer opportunities available for students who wish to help with collection, sorting and distribution. Check back for sign-up options!
