Within the major:

  • language courses prepare students to study abroad;

  • Area Studies courses provide an in depth understanding of the region of the world in which a student is specializing and are frequently taken abroad;

  • students learn how business is conducted in an international context by taking International Business courses;
  • International Studies courses provide the social science foundations to enable students to do meaningful comparative work;

  • the one-semester Senior Research Project enables students to draw upon their foundation and major coursework to examine a problem of their choice.

Flexibility Within the Major

Huntsman students have considerable flexibility when it comes to choosing courses. Departments throughout the university offer a number of courses which qualify as Area Studies, International Studies and International Business courses. Additions are made to these lists whenever departments offer appropriate new courses.

The Language Component

Huntsman students specialize in one of 11 languages:

Arabic Hindi Portuguese
Chinese (Mandarin) Italian Russian
French Japanese Spanish
German Korean

Because Huntsman students matriculate at an intermediate to advanced level of proficiency in their target language, they are prepared to take content-based, upper level courses immediately. Prior to study abroad, students are required to take a minimum of four advanced language courses, two of which should be applied language courses that use contemporary materials to teach the terminology and writing styles of business or law, for example. Spanish for the Professions, Commercial Chinese, and Business Japanese are examples of these "foreign language in context" courses. French or the Professions also prepares students to take the French Chamber of Commerce Examination.
