Access, Security & Privacy
ISC provides University-wide programs, consulting, and security services to protect Penn’s information assets, safeguard personal data, and protect the University's networks and machines from malicious attacks.
Backups
Server Backup (Back-IT-UP): ISC offers backup transfer, storage, offsite recovery services and mirroring that are automated and self-administered. We store compressed data regardless of operating system, file type, or file size.
Desktop Back Up: ISC’s Secure Remote Backup (SRB) for desktops is a self-help service for continuous and real-time backup of desktop computers.
Business Continuity Service (Offsite Recovery): In partnership with SunGard, ISC provides disaster recovery options for Schools and Centers. In the event of a disaster, Penn is provided with a “hot site” recovery center. Access to compatible computing resources enables mission critical systems to run for up to six weeks.
Encryption: ISC offers PGP Whole Disk Encryption accounts to Schools/Centers that do not run their own PGP Universal Server.
Firewall Consulting and Support: ISC can assist with all aspects of planning and deploying a hardware firewall, from defining the perimeter and configuration to deployment and maintenance.
Information Security Awareness Training: ISC has designed materials to enhance staff and faculty awareness regarding risks and appropriate safeguards and has online training that focuses on many important privacy and security topics that faculty and staff should know about. The Office of Information Security is also always available to assist in the development and delivery of customized information security training for your organization.

Network and Antivirus Software: ISC’s PennConnect DVD-ROM contains the recommended networking and antivirus software for students, staff, and faculty. Software can also be downloaded from the virus website and supported products site.
PennKey and Password: ISC developed and manages the University’s PennKey authentication system. A PennKey (username) and associated password are required to verify an individual’s identity to many of Penn’s online systems and services. Faculty, staff, students, UPHS employees, and sponsored guests are eligible for PennKeys.
Secure Hard Drive Disposal: ISC can assist you in the secure disposal of hard drives by providing Local Support Providers with access to our degausser and crusher machines.
Secure Share (file sharing): ISC provides an easy-to-use tool that allows faculty and staff to share sensitive data with designated faculty or staff. The data, accessed via PennKey and password, is stored for up to 30 days.
Secure Space: (collaboration space): ISC provides this flexible and scalable web-based file storage and collaboration space for internal and external collaboration. It is a Penn alternative to “cloud”-based commercial options such as DropBox and BaseCamp.
VPN - Secure Remote Access System (SRAS): ISC’s SRAS allows users to connect/VPN to their School/Center server remotely using any Penn supported browser.
