Getting Started with Virtual Worlds at Penn
Getting started with Second Life (SL) can be daunting. But here's some help!
First,
create an avatar account.
There's more than one way
to do that, each with their own advantages.
You can
go directly to Linden Labs, creators of
SL to create an account.
Or, you can
create your account with the New Media Consortium. Name selection may
be a little clumsier, but you'll enter Second Life for the first time in
an environment dedicated to the support of higher education.
Either approach should serve you well.
Second, if you haven't already done so,
download the SL software
here.
Third, we suggest that members of the Penn user community
do a "boot camp" session
to learn basic skills in SL and to become familiar
with the Penn virtual campus. We schedule these boot camps when
we have 4-10 new avatars ready to spend 30-60 minutes learning from
an experienced SL user.
Contact
Deke Kassabian
to inquire about boot camp times in the near future.
Fourth,
explore!
Log into Second Life with your new avatar account and your newly
acquired skills and explore the Penn Campus.
