PAUL DOLAN, Professor of Economics and Director of the newly-established
Centre for Well-Being in Public Policy at the University of Sheffield,
is currently a Visiting Research Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson School,
Princeton University. His general research interests fall into two
areas. One strand of his research examines how individual and social
well-being should be defined and measured for practical policy purposes.
A second strand is concerned with the measurement of individual's
preferences for use in informing resource allocation decisions in
the public sector. Most of his research to date has explored these
topics within the context of health and health care. Professor Dolan
has written a book on these issues with Professor Jan Abel Olsen,
titled Distributing Health Care: Economic and Ethical Issues, published
by Oxford University Press in 2002. In recognition of the quality
of his research, Professor Dolan received the 2002 Philip Leverhulme
Prize, a prestigious award given to outstanding young British researchers.
