The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of healthcare, reduce its cost, and broaden access to essential services. AHRQ's broad programs of research bring practical, science-based information to medical practitioners and to consumers and other health care purchasers.

The Center for Health Disparity Research and Promotion (CHERP). CHERP’s mission is to reduce disparities and promote equity in health and health care among vulnerable groups of veterans and other populations. CHERP’s research agenda is based on the natural progression of research projects from detecting unrecognized disparities, to identifying and understanding reasons for these disparities (i.e., mechanisms and mediators), to designing interventions to promote equity in health care among vulnerable populations.

Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania (LDI) is the primary locus of Penn's activities and programs in health services research, policy analysis, and education. The Institute is a formal cooperative venture among Penn's schools of Medicine, Business, Nursing, and Dental Medicine, with linkages to the University's schools of Arts and Sciences, Education, Social Work, Communications, Law and Engineering. LDI works to improve the health of the public through multidisciplinary studies on the medical, economic, social, and ethical issues that influence how health care is delivered, including the evaluation of health care interventions, the financing, organization, delivery, and management of care, and the changing behavior of health care providers and their patients.

The Health Care Systems Department of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School is the home of Penn's Doctoral Program in Health Care Management and Economics.
