Submitting an Application
Admission to the LSM program is highly competitive, as the size of each entering class is restricted to approximately 25 students. To initiate an application, students must complete Penn’s Application for Undergraduate Admission and select LSM as their desired course of study.
As part of the application, students must submit a supplemental essay (Form 1-C of the application) explaining the reasons for their interest in the program. They also must forward two SAT II scores, at least one of which must be in the sciences. A strong academic background in math and science is essential. Students are expected to enter the program with advanced standing in at least 3 science subjects including biology, chemistry, physics and/or calculus. Those who do not may need one or two additional semesters in the program in order to meet degree requirements.
In reviewing applications, the committee—consisting of admissions officers and the program directors—will be looking for a good fit between the applicant and the program. In particular, successful applicants will demonstrate high achievement in academic and co-curricular activities, leadership potential, a clear aptitude for both science and business, and a robust interest in exploring the connections between these two fields. The supplemental essay gives applicants the opportunity to discuss the nature and extent of their interest in detail.
Applicants not selected for LSM can be considered for admission to either the College of Arts & Sciences or the Wharton School as a standard degree candidate. Students may identify either single-school option (College or Wharton) as an alternative on the application. Those not admitted to the LSM program will be reviewed automatically for the indicated single-school program.
For the first time, the LSM program will soon be accepting internal transfer applications. Penn freshmen wishing to transfer into the program as sophomores may apply in Spring 2009 for Fall 2009 entry. More information will be available in January 2009.
